Genetic Changes In Mice 'Question Evolution Speed'

Genetic changes in mice 'question evolution speed'

A species of mouse has evolved dramatically in just 150 years, showing genetic change can occur much faster than was thought possible.

The discovery was made by accident by two American biologists studying the genetic make-up of a common wild mouse in Chicago.

Dr Dennis Nyberg and Dr Oliver Pergams, both from the University of Illinois at Chicago, analysed DNA samples from 56 museum specimens of the white-footed mouse dating back to 1855, and 52 wild mice captured from local forests and parks.

They found startling genetic differences between the 19th century and modern mice.

Only one of the present-day mice had DNA that matched that of mice collected before 1950.

While fast evolutionary change has been seen in fruit flies, such rapid evolution in a mammal has not been reported before.

The scientists, whose findings appear in the journal Nature, believe humans may have been partly responsible for the "new" mice.

"Settlers may have brought in mice with the favourable gene that were able to out-compete mice with the native variant," said Dr Pergams.

All hope of thoughtful debate has pretty much gone out the window.

As if Darwinists wish to rationally discuss things. I still have an evolved cubic function circuit that has been left abandoned after being touted as the patent-killer circuit of the millenium.

ROFLMAO!!

Indeed, I forgot about that thread, it disapeared down to the bottom of my current thread list, so was forgotten, sorry about that, LOL.

There will be more threads like that again I am sure, because there will be more circuits that are evolved in the near future, and patents will be pending for them as well.

We live in interesting times.

You say that like it's a bad thing...

In post # 1532, you admitted that you hadn't responded to the evidence of transitional fossils I had linked to. Then in #1634 you claimed you had responded. In #1635, I offered to apologize if you'd show me where you had responded. Now, you say you won't tell me where because you don't want to do my work for me.

Others can draw their own conclusions; I'm out of here. Stay well.

and patents will be pending for them as well.

Ah, but there is no patent pending for the evolved cubic function circuit. I've been looking at the one published in the paper, not the one in the SciAm article and it is trash. I broke it into 9 segments, of which only three connect the input to the output. The other segments either sink some of the signal current or source current from the 2v supply. All of the segments that connect the input to the output go through only a single transistor and there are no feedback loops so it is fairly evident that the circuit cannot perform a cubic function. It may provide 4 output currents that match 4 input currents(the test cases used to evolve, then evaluate the circuit) that also happen to lie close to the cubic function but I don't think that it will be awarded any patent for producing the cubic function.

Oops! I forgot to mention that one of the segments does nothing(d.c. wise that is) and some of the others may not even do the sinking or sourcing.

No, I don't want to do your work for you and no, you won't apologise.

So it's play it your way or you'll take your marbles and go home?

Here's your answer. See "transitional fossil"
