Dad who pluggedprowler spurns deal

A Navy veteran who shot an intruder in his toddler's bedroom decided against pleading guilty to a gun charge yesterday. Ronald Dixon rejected a deal that would have spared him from having to do jail time because he does not want a criminal record, his new attorney said.

Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes initially charged Dixon, 27, with possessing an illegal weapon - an unregistered pistol - after he shot a career burglar he found prowling in his Canarsie home on Dec. 14.

Last month, Hynes reduced the charges to misdemeanor attempted weapon possession, which carries a maximum 90-day jail term. Hynes said he would only ask Dixon to serve four weekends in jail in exchange for a guilty plea.

Criminal Court Judge Alvin Yearwood changed that deal to a year's probation.

"After the people reduced the charges, this was put on for possible disposition," Yearwood told Dixon and his new attorney, Joseph Mure, yesterday. But the Jamaican immigrant declined the deal and left the courtroom without comment yesterday.

"That means he would have a criminal conviction, and that is a big concern to us," Mure said afterward.

Dixon gained widespread sympathy after he was charged with a crime. In a tearful interview, Dixon told the Daily News he could not afford to spend any time in jail because he was working seven days a week to support his family and pay his mortgage.

There are legal ways to do things, this man, unfortunately, decided to sidestep the law.

Thank God he did!

So, NY has a choice, dismiss the law; or enforce it.

Easy choice. Dismiss it! But then again, there is no rightousness in NY, is there?

Amen! However, I would have bet a million $$ (if I had it) that the "the law is the law" contingent was going to show up on this thread.

There is a higher law than man's law.

Taking away the right to keep and bear arms is not a just power of the government. No one, even with the smallest cojones on record, should have to be told that.

Just stay in New York -- please.

Anyone who can read the US Constitution can decide the constitutionality of any given law.
Anyone familiar with logic and reality can decide which laws are nonsense.

I forgot to add one thing to my original reply:
"Stupid laws should be disregarded. Unconstitutional laws should be broken. The penalties for doing so should be fought tooth-and-nail."

Rifleman replys: Well, no. The Supreme Court has held that an unconstitutional law is no law at all. And laws that are unjust, evil or simply stupid should be disobeyed. If he had hidden an escaped slave in 1858 or a Jew in 1941 he would not have been under any obligation to "pay like a man". And he is not in this case.

Even after the enlightenment of the 911 attack, New York is still ruled by the tyrants of the left. They know they are wrong but can't swallow the bitter phlegm of defeat.

This guy, HAD already filled out the paperwork and paid the exorbitant fees. He was complying with the ridiculous laws in this state. Note: He had just moved from Florida, where everything was legal down there.

It was the criminal who was out-of-step, the bad guy should have waited the six month for the paperwork to go through before he broke into the house.

There should be a noticed placed on the guy's door, you must not rob here until xxxxx xx, 2006 until my firearm permit has been approved.

Hynes is a first class, A-1 political Wh-re. He panders to minorities, opposes the Second Amendment, and is highly selective in the way he impliments the law.

He's stuck here. If Dixon sticks to his guns, as he should, Hynes will probaby back down as Dixon is a minority.
Were Dixon white, Hynes would be building a cross now to crucify him.

Dixon was doing what any American has the right to do, and his minority status is a further protection in New York City. Stick to your guns Dixon, make that creep Hynes sweat. He deserves it.

Was this the same guy that was on Hannity and Colmes? If I remember correctly he did have a license for the gun in Florida and he had filed paper work already for the license in NY. It sounds like to me that he did all the right things.. What is he supposed to do? They should have a law that gives a grace period for people moving to the state.
