The bulldozer operator doesn't realize it, but he's descended from the hoards, and as he tries to find a way around Arthur, they're all screaming with disgust in his head to run him over. It's a really funny series of books. Of course, a little later, the entire Earth is destroyed to make way for an interstellar bypass.
