I have a great Aunt who lives in Mexico City (she HATES it). She tells me the newspapers there all the time say that they're planning on conquering the Southwest of the US.

That is all the talk down there, among the upper classes.

As the number of Mexicans living in the U.S. has ballooned (growing from 2 million to 23 million over the past thirty years), so have the feelings of anti-Americanism among them. While the many Mexicans living in the U.S. are still law-abiding and loyal, there are disturbing signs that anti-Americanism is on the increase.

Imagine if they were Muslims and the area in question were East Coast (the craddle of US). Then you could understand how Serbs feel about Kosovo.

The numbers would suggest that they're already half way to being the majority in some states. If they voted to secede is there anything that can legally be done to stop it?

We've already got a bunch of FReepers on record as supporting the concept of "Aztlan" as long as they can come up with the votes to do it.

They're called "Neo-Confederates" and they recognize the right of any region of the country to secede if there is popular support for it.

What are we to make of residents whose first act as “new Americans” was to break the law? Apologists for illegal immigration (like President Fox) say that poverty in Mexico drives the hopeless to enter the U.S. in search of a better way of life. But it is impossible for this country to absorb such huge numbers of largely poor, illiterate people, especially when assimilation is the last thing they have in mind.

Close the border with whatever it takes, deadly force has become neccisary, IMO

I think it's time for a little "conquista" of our own, with Mexico ceding (at gunpoint) the states of Baja (Norte and Sur), Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nueve Leon, and Tamaulipas into a new US territory - self-governed, but under the US Constitution and economic system. Economic refugees could take up residence in this territory, but would face immediate deportation with no appeal if they entered the US illegally.

If the Mexicans don't like this, then they can take their frustrations out on their own corrupt government. And the "brown beret" types need to learn that there are penalties for inciting armed insurrection within the US - a few strategic hangings should suffice.

Perhaps they will come in useful someday. Like the next time the PRC threatens to nuke LA--we can smile and say, "Please do!"

I live just a few miles north of Salinas, CA and the anti-US sentiment is very visable. I have seen that sticker with Calvin peeing on the U.S. flag on quite a few cars. Makes me wish I had twin 50s on my car. On July 4th, they all drive around with huge Mexican flags on their cars. All the "non-profit" groups force the home builders into 20-30% of the subdivision to be low income. Who do you think covers that cost? I can't forget all the little gangbangers that keep killing themselves. Who pays for all the extra OT for the police?

It seems to me that there are and have been quite a few Mexican-Americans in the U.S. military.

"El Presidente is fond of saying that he is not the leader of 100 million Mexicans, but rather 123 million, the difference being those living in the United States"

This sounds a lot like Hitler's "Volkdeutsch" arguments, by which he'd justifiy his terrtorial claims on neighbors by pretending to champion the "oppressed german minority".

He took the Sudetenland from Czechoslovakia on the pretext of protecting the German inhabitants, and shortly thereafter grabbed the rest of the country. Looks like Fox is using the same tactics.

I don't like stereotyping 20 million people.

Roughly 35% of Americans of Mexican descent vote Republican. Are they stereotypical?

For me, the wonder is not that there are tensions as a result of this vast migration, but that there are so few.
