Drug laws won't be on the fall ballot, but tobacco money will

A carefully planned and well-financed campaign to overhaul Michigan's drug laws crashed Tuesday, as the state Supreme Court declined to place the issue before voters in November.

Without comment, the court upheld decisions issued last week by the Court of Appeals and a state elections panel to keep the drug question off the ballot.

Excellent day for drug dealers and cartels. Drugs stay illegal, profits stay robust.

Good news.

I find it fascinating that the self-appointed guardians of free will, the so-called libertarians, are so strongly in favor of using substances that erase free will and enslave people.

Luckily, sanity prevailed.

Yeah, before all you socialists start "getting off" on your so-called "victory":

But a technical error in drafting the language for the proposal proved fatal. The campaign's amendment called for the creation of a new Section 24 to Article 1 of the state Constitution. The state Constitution already has a Section 24, adopted by voters in 1988 to protect crime victims' rights.

Someone goofed in the writing of the proposal. That is what killed it, not some Socialist people to "save people from themselves, since the State owns your body" All folks have to do is draft a corrected proposal for next time.

Of course, when the good people of DC voted for medical marijuana TWICE, and twice had the Senate invalidate their votes..I'm sure you would have all approved of the voices of the voters being squelched in that regard as well...

Execute dealers of hard drugs. Hard means cocaine/heroin/LSD and some others. Marijuana dealers, just boot them out of this wonderful nation. Pay Mexico (or bribe Vincete Fox) 4 million and they will take them.

I guess it would have been horrible to let Michigan voters actually make the choice.

I don't see how anyone can be happy when something is kept off the ballot because of a technical error.

Let the people vote.

Is that such a horrible idea?

Technical errors happen when people are stoned. I dont want my airline pilot, lawyer or gas tanker truck driver high on drugs. We all win when these things can be killed in the earlest stages. Kudos for the Michigan courts.

Great idea, don't let citizens decide what's best for themselves.

I think the judges in Michigan are elected. I'm all for letting elected representatives decide these issues.

No one here that I know of actively advocates full on drug usage, although I suppose people like you need to say that in order to pump up your strawman arguments. What we ARE saying is that the Federal Government doesn't have the authority to run a War on Drugs, and that the current War on Drugs is a socialist, burecratic nightmare that shreds the Constitution, fosters corruption in law enforcement, bloats the government, and creates more crime and problems than it attempts to solve. Many people who don't approve of drug usage are against the War on Drugs. Including the owner of Free Republic itself.

When you accuse drugs of "erasing free will", you blame objects, instead of the people using them. What are you going to tell us next, that guns kill children? That fatty food is all to blame for making children obese? Why do you insist on giving people excuses for their own weak will and lack of self-control? That is a classic Socialist tactic.

Luckily, sanity prevailed. Wasn't sanity. Someone screwed up when they wrote the proposal, and it was rejected on a legal technicality, nothing more.

I wonder if this techincal mistake happened because the lawyer that wrote it was under the influence of illegal drugs? Can America take risks like that?

No one wants that, and you know that damn well. However, the legality of an intoxicant won't have any bearing on that sort of thing. It sure didn't stop those drunk airline pilots...pilots who consumed a LEGAL drug I might add...

LAW ENFORCEMENT stopped those drunk pilots. And while alcohol is legal, they used it in an illegal manner. The law works. Try having some respect for it.

here's nothimg in here that calls for legalizing drus, it's basically just sentencing reform.

LOL Sentencing reform? Yes, instead of going to jail for drug use, the state must pay to house you in some country club 'drug treatment' program that is corrupt and doesn't work. The only thing that works is a cement cell and steel bars.
