CBS' Scott Pelley isn't the first person to observe that in a world of grays, President Bush sees mainly black and white.
But Pelley says there are aspects about the Bush's personality that might surprise some people during Bush's only TV interview this Sept. 11 anniversary week - on 60 Minutes II Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
"There are times in the interview where he is pounding the desk, he's so angry," Pelley said Monday. "There are parts where tears are running down his face as he's describing the people (he) met in New York. Viewers are going to see a man who has a great deal more range of emotion that he betrays in public."
But they'll also see Bush repeating a familiar refrain: "He sees this (the war on terrorism) as a struggle between good an evil and he sees America as the leading champion of good in the world, with a responsibility to put an end to this evil wherever it is - way beyond Afghanistan."
Pelley spent 2 1/2 hours with Bush, speaking to him aboard Air Force One and at the White House. Pelley said Bush gets "a little testy. But I think he has fun with it: He likes the give and take."
Pelley also talked to 20 other Bush administration officials about their recollections of Sept. 11 and ensuing days.
But Pelley devotes a full 40 minutes of the show to examining what happened in the hours immediately after the attacks, when Bush remained largely aboard Air Force One instead of returning to the White House - a controversial move that Pelley came away thinking was justified.
By the end of the day it was Bush who overruled the Secret Service and ordered Air Force One to return to the the capital. "He said, 'Tell my wife to meet me at the White House' - and they did."
Pelley said that Bush is a bit like President Reagan - he paints the big picture but expects others to figure out the nitty-gritty - but someone who, in this case, needed to talk about the days that changed history.
"He was very engaged and thrilled to talk about it," Pelley said. "It was almost as if it seemed he needed to get it off his chest. He wanted to tell somebody about that week and what has been going through his mind."
Why on earth would you be surprised? That is what he wanted when he came on here. He is getting exactly what he sought when he chose to spend his time on this thread instead of a thread on any of the other subjects.
Apparently some of you will never be able to see a decent man for what he is - decent. I could list all the qualities I like for you but it wouldn't make any difference.
I like Bush today, I will like Bush tomorrow. Only an idiot would chose to ignore the effectiveness of this president since he has been in office. Why do you think the approval rating is the highest of any president? Because all of those people are fooled by an actor, all of those people are women who think he is good looking?
How come these same people did not feel that way about Clinton? Maybe Clinton is the reason we are so avidly FOR President Bush.
Finally, sanity is back in the White House and a top notch team. Sort of like the Cowboys team in the good ole days with Staubach. People like to see class, respected people doing great things and we respond to the good guys winning.
So easy, so very easy, to be an armchair participant to tear apart any actual effort of the one in power. I would suppose that should you do so - you too would be torn apart by the other armchair participants who feel you are an "actor", an impostor with a smirk on your mouth indicating a deep, deep feeling of pulling something over on everyone, and you would get to pull a win from the power grubbers surrounding you.
Have at it boy! Now, be sure to check back on FR to see how your supporters feel about your efforts - for encouragement you know.
The moron Dan Rather once wrote, or likely someone wrote from him, a book called The Camera Never Blinks. The point of the title to his scribblings was that given enough time on TV you get to see what someone is really like. Which is a accurate. And because of this none of the modern presidents that have been on TV could ever truly hide their essence. It's just too hard to do. Some of it may be an "act" but who they "are" does seep out. Remember looking at "I did not have sex with that woman?" That one little clip showed us so much about Clinton. Contrived? Yep! But did it "work". Nope!
This same "The Camera Never Blinks" also applies to posts on this site. Read enough and you get a feeling for what a person is really like. In the case of this thread YOUR number was up many many posts back......
I know this is off-topic, but it came to mind.

:o)
"And you know this how?"
Oh, my guess is, the same way you know Bush is "acting."
And now, on to search for a meaningful thread...
Then why are you throwing such a hissy fit?
Typical Kevin Curry. Obsessed with dope. Is that all you think about, Kevin?
On the contrary. I am not claiming victim status. And with respect to the flame war, if indeed one even exists, the overwhelming majority of harsh and immature comments are coming from the Bush psychophants who become enraged at anyone who dares to speak negatively about the subject of their worship.
Then you confess to having done exactly that which you accuse me of doing. You wasted your vote on an unelectable candidate. tsk-tsk-tsk.
My, my, but aren't you the witty one. Your parents must be so proud that you've learned to type.
What I fail to understand is why the fact that many do like Bush bothers so many of you. You would have preferred we have a GOP president that we all hate?
More than likely you would not have been happy with any possible president elected because none will ever do what you want because they can't. To do the things many of you want would insure the election of a democrat the next election if not impeachment for abuse of power while in office.
This is the very ploy that Hillary has a chance of getting into office on. Then Hillary will have no hesitation in turning toward socialism as much as she can while in office and using fraud to insure that the GOP does not get back in power.
The facts are - the only way to get this country back is to get in power and get as many GOP people in as possible and stay in power to prevent the dems from doing more of the destruction that Clinton managed to do.
Now - just keep on complaining to your heart's desire. I will keep on being thankful for George Bush.
Those are your claims, but they appear to be speculation only, or assumptions based on your general understanding of political "best practices." Those assumptions or speculations may all be well-founded. It may all be true. But I think it would be helpful to specify whether or not you have any information directly related to this interview, or to this administration's practices in conducting TV interviews. If it is mere speculation, let's clearly label it. Wouldn't we all look like a bunch of yokels if we immediately took the words of a cynical libertarian with a predisposition against the President as fact without checking into it?
I've already met that challenge on this thread. Give it a perusal and you'll find your answer. As for being a cynical libertarian? No such luck. Granted, I am a bit cynical, but a libertarian I am not. As I've already stated, I'm a Republican. I've been a Republican since the first time I registered to vote. That's why I receive the ballot to vote in the Republican primaries, and not the primaries for the other parties. I suppose it bothers the left leaning faction of the Republican party that there are still a fairly large number of us right leaners still clinging to the hope that the party might be redeemed. It would be so much more fun if you could just pitch us out of the "big tent." But, alas, we are still hanging in there. Occasionally we score a victory over the country-clubber faction of the party machinery. Other times we take our lumps. Whether we ever get driven entirely out of the party remains to be seen. It could happen. You may one day have your victory. Until then, we shall disagree.
Amazing. In other words, he loves this country, represents the anguished feelings of fly-over country, despises the elitist media, believes in the U.S. Constitution and WILL eliminate Saddam. I was never so proud of being an American as when I saw this man and Laura shaking hands at ground zero.
LET'S ROLL... |
Oh, and by the way...he is the President of the United States. If anyone needs verification, please feel free to contact me. |
Sound advice regarding any politician.
