Hungary's Péter Magyar calls out 'Russian-style' sex tape threat as campaign turns ugly

The opposition leader, who is leading the polls ahead of April's elections, says Viktor Orbán's party is orchestrating a smear campaign with secretly recorded intimate videos.

Hungary's opposition leader Péter Magyar has accused Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's ruling Fidesz party of preparing a blackmail campaign against him involving a secretly recorded sex tape, escalating tensions ahead of April's parliamentary elections.

Magyar, whose Tisza party leads Fidesz in opinion polls, said he suspects the governing party plans to release intimate recordings made with surveillance equipment.

"I suspect they are planning to release a recording, recorded with secret service equipment and possibly faked, in which my then-girlfriend and I are seen having intimate intercourse," Magyar wrote on social media.

He said journalists received a photo of a bedroom with the message "coming soon" suggesting a video release is imminent. The image has circulated widely on social media, prompting public debate. The video has not appeared online yet.

"I am a 45-year-old man, and I have a regular sex life, with an adult partner," Magyar added.

The picture is also featured on a website named after the Tisza Party's vice president, Márk Radnai, with the date "2024.08.03" above it. Radnai said the domain does not belong to him.

Fidesz representatives denied involvement in distributing the photo. Under Hungarian law, releasing sexually explicit images without consent is a criminal offence.

The allegations come as tensions grow in the campaign, which has already seen activists attacked and candidates targeted with deepfake videos.

Hungary facing toxic campaign

Tisza, founded just two years ago, now leads Fidesz 35% to 28% among voters, according to the 21st Research Institute. Orbán has governed since 2010 with an absolute majority, and a change in government would reshape Hungary's relationship with the European Union and its stance on the war in Ukraine.

Both parties have deployed aggressive tactics in the campaign. Fidesz has shared AI-generated deepfake videos showing Magyar pledging allegiance to Brussels or supporting Ukraine, positions unpopular with Orbán's base. Government officials routinely describe Tisza as a tool of foreign interests.

Magyar accuses Orbán of corruption and using public funds to benefit family members and allies. He has released a secretly recorded conversation with his ex-wife, former Justice Minister Judit Varga in 2024, in which she discussed government pressure on the judiciary in sensitive cases.

Opposition activists have faced physical and verbal attacks at campaign events in recent months, and town hall meetings with government officials have been disrupted by opposition protesters.

Magyar launched Tisza following a government-linked child abuse scandal that forced two senior officials to resign.

Then-President Katalin Novák and Justice Minister Varga, Magyar's ex-wife, stepped down after Novák pardoned a man who helped cover up abuse at a children's care home.

The scandal eroded public trust in Orbán's administration and created an opening Magyar exploited to build his party rapidly. Tisza's rise represents the strongest challenge to Fidesz in years.

Elections are scheduled for 12 April, with both campaigns expected to intensify in the coming weeks.

“Euronews”

pro-Nato, pro-tranny and pro-pedo propaganda outlet, looks like this “opposition” candidate was sponsored by globohomo-NATO and Orbán found his tapes showing he was a client of Epstein and now is being exposed and the NATO pedo-elites are super mad

Orbán’s is a socialist grifter living on massive EU subsidies paid by hardworking European citizens. The only reason Hungary’s economy is still afloat is thanks to the money pouring in from the EU.
Orban has also violated Trumps order on halting imports of Russian oil.
While the EU has managed to convert, ending Russian Oil imports to a few percent (down to a trickle) lazy Orban preferred to continue buying cheap Russian oil. He STILL imports more than 90% of its oil from Russia! Trump is highly upset by this and gave him a last chance to end all oil imports from Russia within a year. Orban better start working, get out of your bed!

Orban is keeping out the migrants.

That alone is reason enough for Hungarians to support him.

If Israel gets a pass for socialist grifting on massive USA subsidies, why not Hungary?

Orban has saved Hungary thus far. No Rapefugees have been admitted and thus Hungarian women can still go out at night safely and there is no terrorism in Hungary. Nobody is coming in to start to replace Hungarians in their own country. If they foolishly turn away from Fidesz and vote the way the Yurp are trying very hard through media campaigns and financing to get them to vote, the country will be ripe for invasion.

I pray Hungarian voters are smarter than that.

Orban is keeping out the migrants.

Poland shows you can keep out the migrants without being the most corrupt country in the EU like Orban's Hungary, which results in Hungarians being poor

Hungary Remains the Most Corrupt Member State of the European Union for the Fourth Consecutive Year

The poor result reflects the continued failure to remedy rule of law deficiencies and to curb systemic corruption..., manifested in the organized theft of public funds, is the main reason behind the country’s now persistent economic decline.

Pure BS. Orban is the exact opposite of a socialist. He was the young opposition leader who did a lot to bring down the commies in the late 1980s. Its true that Hungary does receive subsidies from the EU but then again so does everybody else in Eastern Europe. The purpose is to bring Eastern Europe up to the level of Western Europe after they endured 45 years of Communist Oppression and got no Marshal Plan aid unlike Western Europe. It completely false however to claim that is the only reason the Hungarian economy is afloat. Hungary has actually performed fairly well economically and its economy is far larger than it was a generation ago.

Hungary does import Russian oil. What else can they do? The only other sources would be far more expensive and contrary to your claims, most of the EU still imports massive amounts of Russian oil. Its just that its been laundered through India and other sources.....but its still Russian oil.

What? Fidesz is definitely on the Right as far as European political parties go. Jobbik is further Right than Fidesz. Peter Magyar's Tisza is a fake Right of Center party that will just roll over and do what the Yurps want....ie Gaia worship and open borders....which will ruin the country.

I am HIGHLY skeptical of such claims. The Yurp elites have it in for Orban because he did not go along with their open borders insanity nor has he gone along with Gaia Worship and he has sought a negotiated settlement to the conflict in Ukraine all along. He is against the whole Gay/Tranny agenda. He passed laws to keep Soros' dirty money from flowing in to influence Hungarian politics. He actually cares about.....gasp! preserving his own country and people!

The Globo Homo Yurp elites can't have this! So they claim he's a dictator even though he's won democratic elections that were free and fair by all accounts in crushing fashion. They've poured money in to support propagandists who will trash him, claimed he's corrupt (he is a little but this is the norm in Hungary AND ANYBODY ELSE WOULD BE TOO.....I lived in Budapest twice, trust me I'm familiar with Hungarian culture), and tried to set up a stooge who will claim to be moderate but who in reality will be a puppet for the Yurp elites and will hand Hungary over to them.

I am HIGHLY skeptical of such claims.

Hungary's corruption is well documented.

Another year of impunity – Hungary’s most serious corruption cases in 2025

The report by Transparency International Hungary illustrates the practical consequences of systemic corruption through three high-profile cases that received the most public attention in 2025. The most striking example of the impunity of high-level corruption is the scandal involving the Hungarian National Bank (MNB). Through a web of foundations and private equity funds, at least HUF 270 billion in public money was stolen, while the fate of roughly the same amount remains uncertain. To date, no one has been held accountable. Although the investigation has been ongoing for a year, no cronies and family members of György Matolcsy, the former MNB governor, have been named as suspects.

Another recent milestone in the crony privatization of public assets is reflected in the transfer of state-owned defence industry interests valued at HUF 72 billion to a subsidiary of 4iG, a company favoured by the NER, without a competitive tender. The report also mentions the Hatvanpuszta manor project, which serves as evidence of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s personal enrichment.

Public procurement and private equity funds

Although several milestones under the conditionality mechanism are aimed to address deficiencies in Hungary’s public procurement system, the sector — representing 5.3% of GDP in 2025 — remains a hotbed of corruption. Despite a slight decline in the share of single-bid tenders, the highest-value contracts continue to be awarded to actors close to the government, including companies linked to Lőrinc Mészáros and László Szíjj. The widespread use of framework agreements further damages the perception of public procurement: in 2024, framework agreements worth HUF 3,219 billion were concluded. Moreover, in more than two-thirds of cases these contracts were concluded in a competition-restricting manner, with only one market actor. photos by Ferenc Isza

Competition in the public procurement market is also undermined by opaque investment structures deliberately and systematically used, such as private equity funds. As noted in Transparency International Hungary’s study published at the end of last year, the identity of ultimate investors in private equity funds remains concealed. For this reason, the EU has launched an infringement procedure against Hungary. Private equity funds are being inflated through various channels of state capital injections: by the end of 2024, the Hungarian state had invested HUF 1,311 billion in private equity funds without transparency or accountability safeguards. According to Transparency International Hungary, this practice is contrary to Hungary’s Fundamental Law.

Economic decline driven by corruption and the dismantling of the rule of law

Hungary has by now become one of the poorest member states of the European Union. The turbulent post-Covid period revealed that the Hungarian economy is far more vulnerable than those of its competitors. Hungary’s economy has stagnated for three years; across most economic indicators, Hungary has become the weakest performer in the EU.

https://transparency.hu/en/news/cpi-2025-results-annual-report/ “The main reason for Hungary’s poor economic performance is an autocratic government that has subordinated its economic policy to systemic corruption and the organized theft of public funds, undermining fair competition,” said József Péter Martin, Executive Director of Transparency International Hungary, at the presentation of the report. The government has undoubtedly achieved results in reducing petty corruption but has used organized corruption as a tool to entrench its power and enrich NER-linked actors. To this end, it has channelled several trillion forints of public money — directly or indirectly — to NER-linked economic actors, severely distorting market conditions. The only way out of the vicious circle of systemic corruption and weak economic performance would be the restoration of the rule of law, which is inconceivable within the framework of the current political regime.

Hungary GDP Growth in 2025 = 4.1% This was after growing at 4.9% the year before

Hungarian GDP growth by year looks pretty good as well.

The unemployment rate has fallen from about 11% in 2013 to about 4.5% now. https://economicdatagdp.com/country/hu

As far as overall corruption, Hungary is about the same as.....everybody else in their neighborhood. There is a certain low level of corruption that exists everywhere in Eastern Europe. This is not new at all. Its very comparable to Latin America. You can't get away with murder per se but......if you get pulled over for speeding you can often pay a "spot fine" in cash to the cop and get let go for example. Trust me, I've experienced this in Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, etc. You can pay some bureaucrat to expedite your new apartment getting hooked up with electricity before everybody else's....that kind of thing. Are some politicos embezzling funds from state banks? I have no doubt there's some of that going on. That would ALWAYS be the case no matter who is elected. That happens in the US and in Western Europe too so let's not act all holier than Thou about it.

Any claims that Hungary is the most corrupt of anybody or that its economy is terrible and they're poorer than everybody else in their region is just pure Yurp propaganda.

Oh, and by the way, much of the Yurp bleating about "the rule of law" has been Orban and Fidesz slowly getting rid of corrupt globo homo judges and appointing good ones in their place - like Nayib Bukele had to do in El Salvador.

As we've seen in the US, judges appointed by the previous regime are often corrupt political hacks who ignore the actual law and simply abuse their power to try to obstruct the policies of the current government. The same thing happened in Hungary.

"the rule of law" has been Orban and Fidesz slowly getting rid of corrupt globo homo judges

Orban's party even pardoned a man who tried to cover up child abuse cases. Its the result of one party rule for too many years.

Hungarian President Katalin Novak resigns over child-abuse pardon scandal February 10, 2024

It was revealed last week President Novak had given clemency to a man jailed for forcing children to retract sexual abuse claims against a director of a state-run children's home.

Judit Varga, the former minister of justice who approved the pardon, has also resigned from her new role leading the European elections campaign for Prime Minister Viktor Orban's ruling Fidesz party.
