Trump officials have been accused of bigotry after the portrait of former President Joe Biden's transgender assistant secretary for health was altered to reflect her birth name.
Admiral Rachel Levine's portrait has hung in a hallway of the Humphrey Building in Washington DC - the Department of Health and Human Services's headquarters - since she became the first trans woman to win Senate confirmation in 2021.
Following the 68-year-old's four years of service under the Biden administration, her name was reverted to Richard Levine, the name she was given at birth.
Levine's dead name - a trans person's original name before transitioning - was typed out and placed under the framed picture of the former official, along with the dates she served in office.
'We remain committed to reversing harmful policies enacted by Levine and ensuring that biological reality guides our approach to public health,' Emily Hilliard, the HHS Department's press secretary, told the Daily Mail.
'Dr. Levine's time here will be looked upon as a sad footnote in the otherwise storied history of this department.'
Levine told NPR that she was grateful for having the opportunity to serve the American people and would not comment on this type of 'petty action.'
The portrait update allegedly occurred during the government shutdown, Adrian Shanker, Levine's spokesperson, said.

Ha! Love it!
They're gonna blow something ... or do something with blow ... or something.
thank you.
CBP uses army military ranks.
AND SHE IS NOT...
It's a group she belongs to..
“Outrage”.
Seriously, the vocabulary is being abused mercilessly by political hacks.
Admiral Rachel Levine was the person who pressured medical experts to remove age limits for irreversible surgery for minors.
But apparently not the uniforms.
Public Health Service uses the same ranking system making rickee dickee do an assmiral. Uh, admiral.
Folks are getting very tired of the outrage mob.
I agree with RightOnTheBorder. The portrait should carry the legal name, but that is not discussed in the article. Departure from that designation is childish.
A quirk in the system ... to make them seem important, they gave them navy ranks. In its case, a rear admiral seemed appropriate.
This is what I donated money to and voted for!
I was always told how great the Rocky Horror Picture Show was. The first time I saw it I didn’t really like it. I also went to one of those late night shows where they throw popcorn and drinks whenever a particular line appears. I didn’t even enjoy that part because I didn’t know when they were going to come. You have to be in with the crowd. I am not.
Why in the world should 7 and 8 be uniformed and commissioned ?
Well No. 7 US Public Health for historical reasons. In the early days almost all the public hospitals that were set up were done by the Navy.
No. 8 the NOAA officer Corps is because they have their own fleet of oceanographic vessels. Again history all early oceanographic work was done by the Navy. Additionally since these vessels go to foreign waters the officers’ uniform gives them more diplomatic clout with foreign government\military
I don’t understand this. Are these United States Public Health Service people just regular government employees? Or are they more like military folks who sign up for a number of years, and then MUST go where Uncle Sam sends them?
Either way, it’s ridiculous that anyone can go from being a private citizen one day to some kind of admiral the next.
