Trump officials have been accused of bigotry after the portrait of former President Joe Biden's transgender assistant secretary for health was altered to reflect her birth name.
Admiral Rachel Levine's portrait has hung in a hallway of the Humphrey Building in Washington DC - the Department of Health and Human Services's headquarters - since she became the first trans woman to win Senate confirmation in 2021.
Following the 68-year-old's four years of service under the Biden administration, her name was reverted to Richard Levine, the name she was given at birth.
Levine's dead name - a trans person's original name before transitioning - was typed out and placed under the framed picture of the former official, along with the dates she served in office.
'We remain committed to reversing harmful policies enacted by Levine and ensuring that biological reality guides our approach to public health,' Emily Hilliard, the HHS Department's press secretary, told the Daily Mail.
'Dr. Levine's time here will be looked upon as a sad footnote in the otherwise storied history of this department.'
Levine told NPR that she was grateful for having the opportunity to serve the American people and would not comment on this type of 'petty action.'
The portrait update allegedly occurred during the government shutdown, Adrian Shanker, Levine's spokesperson, said.

Outrage? Excellent...hope they blow blood vessels.
The person they put in that office was a joke. A horrible, ugly joke. To give that person some status, they made it a high-ranking military officer. Otherwise, there would have been laughter every time that person got up to speak, which was a requirement of the job.
I suspect everyone still snickered, but more quietly than they would have it was just a civilian. (Hang the portrait in the basement men’s room.)
The United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps uses the same commissioned officer rank structure as the United States Navy and Coast Guard: from ensign to admiral (O-1 through O-10).
Daily Mail is a joke... “her dead name”.
Did he legally change his name before being confirmed? If he did I think it would be more truthful to keep the legal name and add an a.k.a. underneath.

The United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps is a branch of uniformed service within the United States Government; it has been so since 1798. For historical reasons related to association with mariners, it uses naval ranks.
Dick Levine, when Biden named him to command the USPHS, was commissioned with that rank as befits his office.
Dick Levine may have been manifestly unfit for office (I certainly think so), but his use of the Admiral rank was absolutely correct.
The only problem with the rank was that he wore a woman's uniform for some queer reason.
