Police are probing the death of a congressional staffer who was found on fire at her home in Texas.
Regina Santos-Aviles, 35, was discovered by her mother, who called emergency crews to the Uvalde residence on the evening of September 13.
She was taken to Brooke Army Medical Center but died from her injuries the next morning, according to the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Santos-Aviles, remembered by friends and family as a 'devoted mother' to her eight-year-old son, had served as the regional district director for Republican US Representative Tony Gonzales since 2021.
Uvalde Police Chief Homer Delgado said there was no indication of foul play, but the Texas Rangers are helping complete their investigation.
Santos-Aviles's mother, Nora Ann Gonzales, described the incident as a tragic accident and that her daughter's final words were: 'I don't want to die.'
'When we arrived, we learned of a fire behind the residence that had been put out with a fire extinguisher,' the fire department chief Mario Rangel told the San Antonio Express-News.
In a statement, Congressman Tony Gonzales said: 'We are all heart-stricken by the recent news.
Police said they were called to Santos-Aviles's home in Uvalde at around 9.30pm, according to a call sheet obtained by KSAT.
The Uvalde Volunteer Fire Department also received a call at 9.39pm for an 'individual who was on fire.'
The call was canceled but firefighters still attended to the home since it was close to the station.
By the time they arrived, the fire had been put out.

At least we can't blame this on the Vaxx ?
Happens to Buddhists a lot.
Safe and effective.
The poor woman, her mom and her child. Such horrible last words.
Candles or cooking?
Yeah, ‘cuz it’s funny when a woman dies like that.
Good grief, what a pathetic comment.
Yeah, I’ll never understand the joke crackers when someone dies...unless it’s a violeht criminal. Only 35 RIP.
You sound just like the deranged lefties celebrating the death of Charlie Kirk.
Either way, it’s heartbreaking what happened.
When I got to the second sentence and saw “Uvalde”, I thought maybe her last words were about that school shooting a few years ago.
Back yard.
I'd guess the barbecue wasn't lighting up fast enough, and she squirted more charcoal lighter fluid on it.
She wouldn't be the first.
“When we arrived, we learned of a fire behind the residence that had been put out with a fire extinguisher”
I was tending a brush pile burn by myself years ago and the fire almost got out of hand after adding some gasoline to get it burning better. And with all the fumes coming out of the gas can it could have exploded. I learned my lesson.
Maybe this is something similar.
I know there is snark and sarcasm on Free Republic, but sometimes people make terrible comments, such as that.
That happened to a friend of mine. He survived but had months of painful recuperation. Amazingly, even though he had second and third degree leg burns he healed completely.
Most likely cooking on gas stove. Long hair or loose clothes too close to the flame. One of my kid’s classmates died this way. Loose blouse sleeves one caught on fire and burned her arm severely. She was recovering and somehow a clot that had formed in the injured area broke loose and went to her brain or lung I don’t remember which and she died. She was 22 or 23 again I don’t remember that part. Real tragedy.
Happened to my wife when she was 12 years old. She was holding a gas can that was open and her brothers were making a fire. The fumes caught and the can exploded. She spent months in burn unit hospital.
I have no respect for anyone making jokes about this horrible accident this poor woman went through..............
Or maybe something more volatile.
Very sad. And they are hiding the cause. It is obvious that they know what caused the fire.
Agreed.
