I was 'swallowed' by a whale and thought I'd die - no one believed me but new video now vindicates me

The Massachusetts lobster diver who was accused of lying about being swallowed by a whale says horrifying footage of a Chilean kayaker who endured the same fate has now 'vindicated' him.

Shocking cell phone footage showed an unsuspecting kayaker being seemingly devoured by an enormous humpback whale near Punta Arenas on February 8.

Fortunately, the whale spat Adrian Simancas, 24, out of its mouth just moments after engulfing him and he was unharmed.

Adrian's panicked father Dell, who recorded the ordeal from another kayak, was heard yelling for him in Spanish - telling his son to remain calm. He quickly paddled over to Adrian, who shouted: 'Did you see it swallowed me?'

Instances of this nature are highly uncommon as whales are generally non-aggressive creatures, but Adrian's incident hit close to home for Michael Packard.

In June 2021, Packard was taken to the hospital with soft tissue damage and a dislocated knee after he was gobbled and spit out by a humpback whale.

The Cape Cod-based diver with more than 40 years experience said he was trapped in its mouth for about 30 seconds.

His story baffled doctors who were unsure if Packard was telling the truth about how he became injured. There was no evidence or video of him being swallowed

The throat of a humpback whales is only about the size of a human fist. It can only stretch about 15 inches in diameter. So the whale ‘coughed’ him up.

Humpback whales are baleen whales, and eat mostly krill and small fish.

If a humpback takes in a human, it is a mistake, and the whale is probably glad to disgorge him or her!

He was in the whales mouth, not down in its stomach. If he were, the acidic solution there would have dissolved him before he ran out of oxygen.

Imagine the poor whale trying to explain it to its friends.

“You got a *what* in your mouth?”

“Yeah, it was *disgusting*! I thought I was gonna *die*! I don’t think there’s enough krill in the whole ocean to kill the taste!”

[The Guide]

It is important to note that suddenly, and against all probability, a sperm whale had been called into existence, several miles above the surface of an alien planet.

But since this is not a naturally tenable position for a whale, this innocent creature had very little time to come to terms with its identity.

This is what it thought as it fell: ‘Ahhh! Whoa! What’s happening? Who am I? Why am I here? What’s my purpose in life? What do I mean by ‘who am I’? Okay, okay, calm down, calm down, get a grip now.

Ooh, this is an interesting sensation. What is it? It’s a sort of a tingling in my... well, I suppose I better start finding names for things. Let’s call it a... tail! Yeah! Tail! And hey, what’s this roaring sound, whooshing past what I’m suddenly gonna call my head? Wind! Is that a good name? It’ll do. Yeah, this is really exciting! I’m dizzy with anticipation! Or is it the wind?

There’s an awful lot of that now, isn’t it? And what’s this thing coming toward me very fast? So big and flat and round, it needs a big wide sounding name
like ‘Ow’, ‘Ownge’, ‘Round’, ‘Ground’! That’s it! Ground! Ha! I wonder if it’ll be friends with me? Hello Ground!’

The sperm whale crashed into the ground, viewed from a distance with a rising plume of ice/snow.

I thought the James Bartley story had been pretty well debunked by now.

I agree about the Bartley story. These accounts of getting momentarily swallowed and then spit up seem plausible enough though.
