A Texas police officer was caught on camera shooting a man 15 times during a pursuit, after he confronted him about jaywalking across the street.
But San Antonio police say Jeffrey Schopp, 33, died from a self-inflicted gunshot to the head, KENS 5 reports.
The incident began on December 3 when Police Officer James Lopez caught Schopp crossing the street at Loop 410 and Jones Maltsberger Road without using the crosswalk - which is a Class C misdemeanor in Texas, punishable by up to a $200 fine.
In body camera footage released by the San Antonio Police Department, Lopez could be seen parking his police vehicle and confronting Schopp, who was carrying a backpack.
The officer tells Schopp to walk toward him, at which point Schopp becomes defensive.
'I'm not doing all that, man,' he said as he sat on the railing. 'Am I under arrest?'
'You're detained right now,' Lopez replied. 'Walk over here.'
When Schopp then asked why he was being detained, Lopez replied it is 'for crossing the street without a crosswalk.'
Schopp then apologized to the officer, claiming he had to get to the hospital for an arm injury.
But Lopez seemed to get even more irritated, raising his voice, as he said, 'I ain't looking for an apology. Come over here right now before I put you in handcuffs.'
Still, Schopp continued to apologize - apparently making Lopez even angrier.
'I ain't listening to that s***,' the officer shot back. 'Come here. Come over here now.'
At that point, Schopp dropped his backpack and ran across the street, into a parking garage as Lopez gave chase.

Assassination of citizen by cop. The officer was acting like a totalitarian jerk from the get-go.

He dropped his bag and ran. Body came shows him holding pistol as he is running.
And all the cop had on him was jaywalking? Hell, that isn’t enough to work up a spit.
I do think that resisting arrest should carry an extremely hefty mandatory prison sentence. Make sure everyone knows that — like the Miranda rights which everyone has heard recited on TV shows a million times. Running from the police, or struggling with the police will get you real prison time.
The actual purpose would be to cut down on shootings and George Floyd type incidents. Fight the cops in court, not in the streets.
The guy flashed a gun as he ran.
He was most likely a known felon. He was probably required to submit to a search upon demand.
I am nowhere near as supportive of the police as I was in my younger days. But I won’t immediately bash them on this shooting.
And that’s because the civilian pulled a gun. Then what did he do with that gun right after? Point it directly at the cop? The article doesn’t say.
As to the jaywalking, not everything should be treated as a great crime requiring immediate intervention. How about the cop just calling out, “Hey, pal! Use the crosswalk next time.”
There is an entire culture of people living in large cities who saunter across or down the middle of the street dating motorists to hurt them.
No, it was a life or death situation.
If Schopp had a gun, the article is misleading. He was shot at for having a gun and resisting arrest, not jaywalking.
But the cop Lopez was incredibly unprofessional. From being a first-class a-hole initially, which escalated the situation, to unloading his entire clip at Schopp and having to reload.
looks like meth head
All other problems being solved... I am glad we can finally have our brave law enforcement officers take on the Societal scourge of jay-walking...
Do I need a sarcasm tag?
Guy pulled a gun so no problem for me. Bad shooting by the cops though.
” From being a first-class a-hole initially, which escalated the situation, to unloading his entire clip at Schopp and having to reload.”
Agreed the officer was less than friendly but are you saying the officer should check the target after each round? I think firing until the threat is neutralized is the best way to train. Personally, I keep my hand away from my weapon when addressed by any law enforcement officer.
That type of weapon doesn't use a clip.
When are these jack booted roid rage ifested thugs going to get some back? It is time to reign them or take them out.
