Mine does the exact same thing, starting within the last week. I am using the Firefox browser. The shortcut I use to come to FR is the same as always, https://www.freerepublic.com/tag/articles:latest/. I see the field initially populate with the *, then it switches to the 1, just like yours.

Maybe the programmer is debugging code and using that as confirmation of code execution.

I guess it’s the forum software that has an issue and not the end user. Nothing can be done on our end to stop it.

It’s more of a nuisance than anything. One click on the word “Forum” at the top takes me to where I wanted to go from the start. Hopefully the webmaster will find something they did wrong in the site programming. Maybe just an overlooked or accidental change.

There’s very little in the settings and nothing that would change this site behavior.

Yes, that’s exactly what pops up on mine. Never did it before this past few days.

I think I found the issue in the page source.

form id=”site_search” method=”post” action=”/perl/go-button”>
input type=”text” name=”s” size=”20” value=”1” class=”text” onfocus=”this.select(); site_search_focus(1);” onblur=”site_search_focus(0)” />
input type=”submit” value=”Search” class=”submit” />
div id=”site_search_extended”>
strong>Search:</strong>
select name=”type” onfocus=”site_search_focus(1);” onblur=”site_search_focus(0)” >
option value=”keywords”>Keywords</option>
option value=”users”>Users</option>
option value=”titles”>Titles</option>
option value=”yahoo”>Yahoo</option>

Yep. The same thing is happening to me. Now it gives me my screen name (Wingy) but it reverts back to (1). Tried to delete but it just comes back.

I think it has something to do with the Brave and Firefox browser software (maybe others). It doesn’t do it in Google Chrome for some reason.

I wonder why the programmer hasn’t been able to fix it. It really is annoying.
