Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said he understands that discussions are “ongoing” between the owner of a Mayo hotel, that was due to house International Protection applicants, and the Department of Integration.
A protest has been taking place this weekend outside the former JJ Gannon’s hotel on Ballinrobe’s Main Street in County Mayo.
Protesters say they want assurances from the Department of Integration that plans to house 50 asylum seekers there will not proceed.
Mr.Varadkar said he “totally” acknowledges that people locally have concerns and fears and that their fears must be allayed with communication and provided information.
Speaking on RTÉ’s This Week today, he said: “I also need to be very clear. Nobody in a free society, nobody in a democracy has a right to exercise a veto on who moves into their area or community. That doesn’t just apply to international protection.” …

Also, the writing here is atrocious; just to clarify, people in Ballinrobe, County Mayo do not want so-called asylum seekers housed in J.J. Gannon’s Hotel (defunct) in that town.
Ireland is the early stages of progressive-variant Communism. I hope the traditional Irish people will be able to put a stop to it.
I’m half Irish on my father’s side. His brother hailed from County Cork. I’m sad to say that the Irish have been horribly abused throughout their history. They have also made horribly bad decisions throughout that same history. Not least of which has been to side with socialists and socialist ideation in modern times. None of that has ever worked for anyone except those in charge. Now they’re swirling the bowl of wokeness and it will not turn out well for them. Having said that, Ireland has a new hero in Conor McGregor. We’ll see how it works out.
bttt
Conor McGregor is certainly pugnacious enough to take on the fight! And he’s made it clear that he’s considering doing it. I wish him and the Irish people well.
My people all came from Ireland. From Laois and Waterford.
Go to You Tube and see what the Irish think of us.
All I can say is I’m glad my people caught the boat off that island craphole.
“Go to You Tube and see what the Irish think of us.”
I know what you are hinting at. There is a lot of hate for the Irish diaspora from supposedly Irish commenters on the internet.
Why dont they take a cue from Harvard and appoint
a “Director of Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging”...../s.
Trying to force a bunch of refugees into a hotel against the wishes of actual Irish citizens is different from Irish citizens moving from one town to another. You would think that the PM would understand that.
Thinking of the Blazing Saddles scene with the line “But we don’t want the Irish!”
Ireland kicked out the British only to now be ruled by a homosexual Indian foreigner.
Ian Paisley is laughing in his grave.
Give Ireland Back To The Irish!
England ain’t much better.
They even issued a stamp honoring Che Guevara, who was half-Irish.
Quite true. I knew it was pretty much gone, but visited London and environs last spring. Never, ever, going back. The culture has been gutted.
Let there be no doubt about where Ireland stands. We want nothing to do with a backward-looking idea of sovereignty. We remain absolutely committed to the ideals of the European Union. So there goes Ireland’s current “leadership” defecating on the dead from 1916 and other battles supposedly for “independence” and a “united Ireland” that they continue to extol for political gain. If sovereignty is a “backward-looking idea” to them, then they are leading Ireland into even greater depths of abject slavery than at any other time in its history.
— Micheál Martin, current deputy prime minister, 2017
They think we’re ‘’dumb’’ and they hate Trump. Gobshittes, as the Irish would say. Talking s**t as it translates.
