Migrants who spent their life savings traveling from Africa to NYC have complained that they have been sold a dream by Hollywood - but the Big Apple is not what they expected.
Hundreds of homeless expats, mostly young and middle-aged African men, were waiting in line outside a church on East 7th Street in Manhattan's East Village on Thursday, hoping to find a place to sleep.
Among them was Landry, 40, from Congo, who told DailyMail.com he spent his life savings of $9,000 traveling to the US, taking the difficult decision to leave his wife and 14-year-old son behind four months ago.
The military veteran had been hoping to land a job in construction but he's been unable to find work in the city and ended up sleeping on the streets in sub-zero temperatures after shelters ran out of space.
Conditions in Congo were 'terrible' according to Landry, with frequent fights between ethnic groups and oppressive laws - but he said life in the Big Apple has been 'even worse.'
'It's like prison here,' he said, speaking in French. 'It's negligence. We have no access to food, toilets, or anything. Animals live better here - pets in the street are treated better than us.
'The UN building is right there to talk about the problems around the world but look at all this on the doorstep... desperation and lack of services.'
'We were sold a dream in Hollywood films and TV, but the reality of life in New York City is not like the movies,' he said, adding that he had been bussed over from California.
Landry said: 'I cry and think, why did I do this? But it's too late. I spent my life savings coming here and now I can't get a job. What can I do?'

He’s likely spent all his energy and time communicating and studying with other unwanted imports on how to ‘game our system’ and do exactly what you’ve said. Time that he could have spent ‘really’ looking for a job (along with the responsibilities that go with).
He’s just another in the endless throng of this world’s ‘economic refugees’ wanting to come here and take all they can get without doing anything substantive for it.

I’m really old, but I do remember when genuine Vietnamese War refugees had to stay in camps in other countries until a US organization or individual sponsored them to enter the country.
These illegal alien mobs remind me of swarms of locusts.

If he moved a few hundred miles north he’d be in a French speaking society in the province of Quebec. Whether that would enhance his chances I don’t know. It’s even colder up there than NYC. Given his naivety about Hollywood and America he probably doesn’t even know Quebec exists.
I’d love to know who sold him this bill of goods, and no, it wasn’t “Hollywood”. $9000 is a good chunk of change and it went somewhere to get him here. If he has a complaint it’s with the people who talked him into this, got his transport arranged, and took his money. Who, incidentally, may well have taken money from the UN or other NGOs as well, to do so. This whole thing is a thinly disguised international trafficking racket with the U.S. on the hook for paying the final installment, and paying, and paying.

This is just the start. Their demands will escalate.
In most of the movies and TV shows, almost everybody is magically at least upper middle class or higher, no matter how stupid they are.
Everybody living in a nice house or apartment, driving a new car or SUV.
Someone on the outside, looking in would figure that is just the way it is in the USA for everybody and do anything possible to get here.
We need to interview him and others like him from the various countries the are coming from and get those interviews on TV there.
When the Vietnamese boat people came over it was already obvious how the left was pro-immigrant in every way, until these anti-Communist refugees showed up.
There was an odd lack of enthusiasm and even hostility from the democrats when it came to the South Vietnamese.

Yes they will. They already have their names and that is all they need to apply for an absentee ballot for them and fill it out. In CA they would have them apply for a drivers license and they would automatically be registered to vote, thus be on the voter rolls.

That “church” is two blocks away. Those illegals look scary. They really do stand out when they walk down the street. They’d be better off being sent to Harlem where they would blend in better and have a chance of getting a job sweeping sidewalks.
