Can’t (legally) shoot them if they’re fleeing. Unfortunate, but that’s the law. I would have thought in this case there may not have been any witnesses. I certainly wouldn’t have seen anything.

Yep. The video clearly shows the jeweler shooting at someone who was running away from him. But you never know. Maybe the thief had turned towards the jeweler a split second earlier, with a gun in his hand.
Perhaps one moral of the story is this. The government will be slow to protect a citizen, but quick to persecute him. So if you don’t need to take a chance, don’t.

The reason 911 took place is that the government had instructed airlines to teach their crews to simply give up to hijackers. This was to avoid anyone getting hurt. Because it’s the government’s role to stop people from getting hurt. Anyone who fought hijackers could expect to be punished regardless of whether he stopped a hijacking or not. This is the same kind of thinking. No one would be hurt if the jeweler simply handed over the money. Defending mere property by killing someone would be a worse crime than just losing the property.
The thing is the right to property and to protect your property is the actual essence of civilization. If you don’t have property rights, you can’t have civilization. This is why the blue cities are dying.

It sounds like they decided that if the crooks are killed while committing a crime, the victim will serve their sentences in prison. That’s a good plan. Helps keep the cells full and everyone employed.

But prosecutors have argued in court that following the crooks outside before shooting them as they got into a car is tantamount to an 'execution'.
I wholeheartedly disagree. Clearly this was a combination of "justice", "karma", and "property recovery". Why on earth should they be allowed to escape after what they had done, while still holding his property? Given the same circumstances and opportunity, especially with a wife and daughter involved, I'm certain I would have reacted the same way. They can call it "execution" if they want; don't care. Words have no meaning anymore. Action is required. The benefit of saving others from enduring what he just endured is a community service to a host of would-be future victims.

The government would have done a lot to stem crime if they had just 100% defended the store owner. Italians would have gotten armed up and the criminals would have been put on notice.

Oddly just north of all this in Germany gang rapists got off scot free. Very selective justice these days.

40 years ago a bodega on Hillside Ave in Queens had been robbed a half dozen times. Orwner got himself a pump action shotgun. Three guys came in with piztols. Owner blew 2 away, chased thd third onto Hillside and put a slug in his back. He was charged with murder 2 for the third guy. Theory of no longer a threat. He pled to manslaughter 2.

Italy is not a place to find justice. Its a place of bias and prejudice, jealousy and bad tempered persons.
