A jeweller in Italy has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for shooting dead two crooks who robbed his store and tied up his daughter, prompting a fierce debate on the limits of self-defence.
Mario Roggero shot at three thieves in Grinzane Cavour on April 28, 2021 after they entered his store, bound his daughter's hands behind her back, threatened to kill his wife and helped themselves to expensive jewellery and watches.
Fearing for his life, Roggero was seen on CCTV chasing them out of the shop and shooting at least five times.
Andrea Spinelli and Giuseppe Mazzarino died a few yards from the shop entrance, one in the street and the other on the corner with a side street. A third robber was injured and later arrested.
Roggero's sentencing has sparked outrage in Italy as politicians weigh in and say the jeweller was only defending himself and his family.
'He worked hard all his life, and he was just trying to defend his family and his business,' Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini said, expressing his 'full solidarity'.
But prosecutors have argued in court that following the crooks outside before shooting them as they got into a car is tantamount to an 'execution'.
A man, who appears to be Roggero, is held at gunpoint as he is moved through the store and into a back room.
'They were counting: five, four, three… I thought I was going to die,' Roggero later told the Italian press.
The men filled sacks with goods before making their escape outside.
Footage from the car park then shows Roggero pulling a gun on the thieves and shooting at them as they run.
One was later found dead in the middle of the street, another on a nearby corner.

It sounds like they decided that if the crooks are killed while committing a crime, the victim will serve their sentences in prison. That’s a good plan. Helps keep the cells full and everyone employed.
The government would have done a lot to stem crime if they had just 100% defended the store owner. Italians would have gotten armed up and the criminals would have been put on notice.
Oddly just north of all this in Germany gang rapists got off scot free. Very selective justice these days.
40 years ago a bodega on Hillside Ave in Queens had been robbed a half dozen times. Orwner got himself a pump action shotgun. Three guys came in with piztols. Owner blew 2 away, chased thd third onto Hillside and put a slug in his back. He was charged with murder 2 for the third guy. Theory of no longer a threat. He pled to manslaughter 2.
“a way to protect one’s family and loved ones from the injustice of the government.”
or interlopers.
I tend to see the bar scene from A Bronx Tale as summing it up nicely. A group of bikers enter the neighborhood, they refuse to abide by local standards or manners, so the neighborhood dishes out their own justice.
Yep, worth every penny paid for “protection”, or law enforcement.
I was talking to a sheriff’s deputy in Montana and how he has to cover such a huge area - he was the one guy on duty for the weekend. He said the farthest town he covers was 200 miles away or something crazy.
“But, we rarely go up there. They have their own way of taking care of law breakers, and we just try to steer clear of the place.”
“$0R0$ DA..................”
In Italy?
He’s multinational..............
Italy is not a place to find justice. Its a place of bias and prejudice, jealousy and bad tempered persons.
Sounds like the world wide justice system has been printed and now in use.
Yup.
Can’t (legally) shoot them if they’re fleeing. Unfortunate, but that’s the law.

Supposedly, in India, forest workers wear masks on their heads backwards do fend off tiger attacks.
So, if I, as a crook, wear a mask of the back of my head, but on my front, will that give me legal immunity?
Best general advice to an individual about a public group and interactions there with.
Yup. BTW to other Freepers, that does not mean I agree this is just or proper. We're just stating facts.
He should have gotten a marksmanship award and the keys to the city!
>Theory of no longer a threat.<
So the first six times the punk was no threat. What about the seventh time? Oh, there was no seventh time. The bodega owner had to know there would be a seventh time if he didn’t pull the trigger.
The same applies to the jewelry store owner. They will come back if they faced no resistance.
When someone says “I will kill you”, how long is that threat active? Does it matter if they lower their weapon? Does it matter if they turn their head? Does it matter if they turn their back? Does it matter if they are returning to their getaway car to retrieve something?
EC
That’s a law that needs to be rescinded in every state. It will save the taxpayers untold amounts of money and cut down on crime. A two ‘fer. Any criminal killed during the commission of a felony should be bought and paid for, too. The citizen performing the public service should get an award, like free ammo for a year or similar.
