Irish criticism of Israel not harming bid to get citizens out of Gaza - Martin

Tánaiste Micheál Martin has said there is no evidence his Government’s criticism of Israel is hindering efforts to get Irish citizens out of Gaza.

Around 35-40 Irish passport holders remain in the territory and none had been included on the lists of international citizens able to leave through the Rafah crossing to Egypt.

Mr. Martin insisted Israeli authorities and officials in Egypt were helping Irish diplomats in their efforts to get the citizens out.

Last week, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said some of Israel’s actions in Gaza were not just self-defense and resembled “something more approaching revenge”.

Mr. Varadkar conceded that Israel would not consider Ireland a close friend or ally, as it has a different stance on Palestine than most western countries.

A far-right member of Israel’s cabinet was quoted at the weekend as saying Palestinians in the Gaza Strip could “go to Ireland or the desert”.

Mr. Martin was asked whether Ireland’s political stance was a factor in the difficulties it was encountering getting its citizens out of the territory, with Israel potentially seeking to punish the Irish Government.

“We’ve no evidence for that at all,” he told RTÉ. “But we’ve been working with Israeli authorities. We’re not on the list (of people leaving via the Rafah crossing). We weren’t on the list in the last number of days. That’s just a fact. But we will work on a continuing basis to get our citizens out.” …

At one time the Irish knew how to fight. In times past they fought for the French, Imperial Russia, and the English - to name a few. Today it seems we’re either terrorist gangsters or weenies suckin’ on the Eurotit.

Absent extenuating cirumstances, the Irish have become degenerate and hostile enough to merit a spot at the bottom of the list.

Think it’s a coincidence that the Irish refused to fight Hitler?
