Three Texas police officers have been charged with the murder of a 46-year-old woman who was having a manic episode and was cutting wires to her apartment building's fire alarm system.
San Antonio police sergeant Alfred Flores, officer Eleazar Alejandro, and officer Nathaniel Villalobos were the three officers involved in the June 23 incident.
The woman, identified as Melissa Petez, was experiencing a mental health crisis around 2am on Friday, officials said. Bodycam footage captured her yelling and at one point holding a hammer.
'It appears Ms. Perez was having a mental health crisis,' the police chief said.
The officers who arrived at the scene first attempted to help Perez and walk her to a patrol unit, but she ran back inside her apartment and locked the door and the situation escalated.
Officers tried to speak to her through an open window, but she threw a glass candle at the one of the officers, the police chief said.
Two officers were seen leaping on top the patio area while Perez was holding a hammer and swinging it inside the home in the direction of where the officers were standing.
The hammer ended up hitting and shattering one of the windows but none of the officers appeared to be hit by the hammer.
One of the officers responded by opening fire, but it doesn't appear that Perez had been hit by the round of bullets.
She then attempted to go back outside where the officers were standing, with hammer in hand, and that is when the officers again opened fire and she was fatally struck by gunfire

Whenever someone right-of-center states an opinion, it's "violence."
Sounds like a danger to me. A hammer hit to the head is deadly.
Given this simp gynocentric country, I still am surprised they didn’t taze her. I suppose they probably thought she was on drugs (which she may have been on as well as off meds) and the tazer may not have worked.
I don’t like cops much, since I have had some bad experiences with them, but this sounds like a real tough situation.
The woman and all 3 cops: Hispanic. The New Texas.
The world would be a safer place if we just took away everyone’s hammer. //sarcastically spoken of course//
The cops are justified. She wasn’t running at them with a feather! If you weren’t there, all that coulda, woulda, shoulda crap don’t count!
pics or it didnt happen
Yep, just shoot her down in the street like a rabid dog. After all, it wasn’t your mom.
It’s San Antonio. So probably 96% Mexican, 3.99% White and then .01% Irish/Mexican. (Pato O’Ward- Indy Racing League Driver)
What I’m curious about is how many Rounds did the cops fire at this Woman and how many Rounds actually hit Her ?
It’s drugs.
“mental Health Crisis” Is drug usage. I’ll bet good money on it.
which considering the recent spat of cops getting reams for tazering Coke heads, i’m not surprised they didn’t taze her.
Plus you know, a fracking hammer in her hand.....
I’m not sure whether you’re being sarcastic or not.
She was inside her home. The police were outside. They shot her through her front door, because she was waving around a hammer. That’s why they’re being charged with murder.
Agreed. The cops were in the right to dispatch this woman.
Never bring a hammer to a gun fight.
Charging the cops with murder is overkill. Pun intended.
Officials are just getting out in front of the bleeding heart crowd who would be demanding murder charges later on anyway.
But the cops overreacted as well. The only upside to the story is that there is one less crazy idiot around.
They should have shot her in the knee.
Or sent in a mental health social worker.
Or had her learn to write code.
Mess with the bull, get the horns.
Sensible hammer control???
“Hey, lady, get over here,” the officer says.
Perez beings walking away, and the officer pursues her. “Get over here.”
“Nope,” Perez replies as she continues to walk toward her apartment and the officer runs after her.
Then, an officer is seen jumping onto Perez’s balcony.
Her balcony window is open, and the officer removes the screen.
Perez tries to close the window and tells him to stop.
The officer then raises his pistol and points it at Perez, telling her “You’re going to get shot.”
“Shoot me,” she replies.
Glass is then heard shattering, and the woman yells something at the officers.
The video then cuts to multiple officers standing at the balcony and then one officer again jumping over it.
“Hold on,” the officer says.
The woman replies, “You ain’t got no warrant.”
Another officer then says, “Let’s go. Move it.”
Two officers were then seen standing in the patio area.
One officer then turned around to reveal several officers who then all started yelling, “Watch out! Watch out!” before gunshots erupted from the officers toward the woman.
From a different perspective, one of the officers could be seen trying to open the door again.
The woman appeared to be still standing.
The officers start yelling to her, “Hey! Hey!” and more gunshots go off.
From another perspective, multiple officers could be seen firing shots at the woman’s apartment.
A hammer can not be seen clearly in the footage
Doesn’t pay to be a cop these days.
If three cops can’t deal with one woman armed with a hammer without shooting her, perhaps they’re in the wrong profession.
