Nostalgic photographs from the 1970s and 80s have revealed how Americans partied when life was 'a little bit more free'.
Back in the pre-selfie age when smartphones were unheard of, families flocked to the nation's hotspots and revelers danced the night away without care.
And while beaches were packed with sun-soaked swimmers and streets roared with muscle cars, photographer Mitch Epstein was on the scene to capture it all.
The electric pictures, which bring back the golden days from every corner of America, can be found in Manhattan's Yancey Richardson Gallery until April 8.

Please note that no one seems to care if you were white, black, fat, or even gay as long as you were having fun and not an activist.
Looks “happy” in NYC.
The “U.S. Army veterans” are wearing Marine uniforms.
They also had to deal with Disco, so it was FAR from enjoyable then.
1970s and 80s were a much better time.
Would like to travel to 1980 and never come back.
Yes, those were idyllic days (and the 1980s too).
People had such an assumption of privacy back then that it was considered very rude to snap a picture without getting their permission first. Most people didn't even have cameras with them, which required film and other accessories. They were a pain to carry around.
As a result, people were more relaxed and uninhibited.
Speaking of vacation, one of the greatest feelings you could have back then was the utter freedom of leaving your office for a vacation. As soon as you walked out the door, you did not have to think about work until the morning you returned.
The whole workplace could fall apart but you would have no way of knowing. There was no way your boss could get in touch with you (unless you spent your vacation sitting at home).
Due to the instant reach of cellphones, email, internet, etc., I haven't had a real vacation in decades.
well it is a brit newspaper, they or the AI are clueless about what happens across the pond.
You went to the wrong discos bro. Everybody I knew had a blast.
Disco, Pintos, bad hair all around, bell bottoms, and way too many things made with/from corduroy that shouldn’t have been.
I bet you’re fun at the Disco Party! 😊
AlGore? The “real” Al Gore would never make such a well reasoned statement.
This must be a gay beach in that first photo...!
Speak for yourself. LOVE disco.
But then, I love all kinds of music.
One of the few things about the ‘70s that was truly terrific (almost all the music was - especially love songs). Actually latter-day disco-inspired style was good generally - not the early which was really left-over hideous hippie crap from the ‘60s. Yet usually the ‘70s get the blame.
Ok daily mail, more like from the 50’s were beach party’s and family camping trips.
1970s and 80s were a much better time.
Would like to travel to 1980 and never come back.

I cannot think of any time in America’s history when race relations were at their finest.
Before LBJ’s Great Society had a chance to fully screw up black and white relationships.
The beach pic is filled with homosexual behavior that many of us never saw in that era.
very few fatsos
“Speak for yourself. LOVE disco.”
Yipe, outvoted on this one!
I saw and ignored plenty of it.
Unlike today they were not militant and mostly did not aggressively get in your face.
_____
I met her in a club down in old Soho
Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like Coca-Cola
C-O-L-A, Cola
She walked up to me and she asked me to dance
I asked her her name and in a dark brown voice she said, “Lola”
L-O-L-A, Lola
Lo-Lo-Lo-Lo-Lola
Well, I’m not the world’s most physical guy
But when she squeezed me tight, she nearly broke my spine
Oh, my Lola
Lo-Lo-Lo-Lo-Lola
Well, I’m not dumb, but I can’t understand
Why she walks like a woman and talks like a man
Oh, my Lola
Lo-Lo-Lo-Lo-Lola
Lo-Lo-Lo-Lo-Lola
Well, we drank champagne and danced all night
Under electric candlelight
She picked me up and sat me on her knee
She said, “Little boy, won’t you come home with me?”
Well, I’m not the world’s most passionate guy
But when I looked in her eyes, well, I almost fell for my Lola
Lo-Lo-Lo-Lo-Lola
Lo-Lo-Lo-Lo-Lola
Lola
Lo-Lo-Lo-Lo-Lola
Lo-Lo-Lo-Lo-Lola
I pushed her away
I walked to the door
I fell to the floor
I got down on my knees
Well, I looked at her, and she at me
Well, that’s the way that I want it to stay
And I always want it to be that way for my Lola
Lo-Lo-Lo-Lo-Lola
Girls will be boys and boys will be girls
It’s a mixed up, muddled up, shook up world
Except for Lola
Lo-Lo-Lo-Lo-Lola
Well, I’d left home just a week before
And I’d never, ever kissed a woman before
Lola smiled and took me by the hand
She said, “Little boy, gonna make you a man”
Well I’m not the world’s most masculine man
But I know what I am and I’m glad I’m a man
And so is Lola
Lo-Lo-Lo-Lo-Lola
Lo-Lo-Lo-Lo-Lola
