Barney's new look is facing scrutiny across social media, after Mattel, Inc unveiled his CGI makeover on Monday while teasing the relaunch of his beloved franchise.
In response to the purple dinosaur's new look, which included a wider grin, gap between his teeth and green eyes, many were left wondering why the company choose to fix some that 'wasn't broken.'
'Why does Barney look like he’s sky high cracked on cocaine? That face is unsettling as hell,' one Twitter user asked as more expressed horror over his new face and teeth.
On Monday, Mattel, Inc. announced it will be relaunching the beloved franchise as it unveiled their modernized new version of the beloved Tyrannosaurus rex.
The revitalization will occur across television, film, YouTube, music, toys, books, clothing, and more, a press release for the relaunch revealed.
Mattel is also developing a line of apparel and accessories of the original Barney for adult fans. In addition, a new animated series for preschool children is slated to debut globally in 2024.
News of the relaunch comes five months after Peacock released I Love You, You Hate Me, a docu-series exploring the 'dark side' of the world of Barney.
Much like the original program, 'the series will feature the ubiquitous purple dinosaur and friends, introducing new audiences to the world of Barney through music-filled adventures centered on love, community, and encouragement,' according to the release.
'Barney's message of love and kindness has stood the test of time,' Josh Silverman, Chief Franchise Officer and Global Head of Consumer Products at Mattel, said.
'We will tap into the nostalgia of the generations who grew up with Barney, now parents themselves, and introduce the iconic purple dinosaur to a new generation of kids and families around the world across content, products, and experiences.'

Ha ha! I remember playing Barney, in full length costume, and nailing his goofy voice - for my then girlfriend’s 3 year old son’s birthday party. The embarrassment, disappointment, and shame on my dear dad’s face was EPIC.
