At least one person is confirmed dead after 60 cars were involved in a crash in Oregon when heavy fog caused by massive wildfires from neighboring Washington state reduced visibility.
The massive pileup in Willamette Valley near Halsey, Oregon occurred around 8 a.m. Wednesday as the extremely thick fog, caused by smoke from raging wildfires trapping moisture at the surface covered Interstate 5.
Oregon State Police later confirmed that at one person was killed in the pileup and at least three people were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital. An unknown number of motorists were transported to Riverbend Hospital. Their conditions are not known.
Interstate 5 remained completely blocked with a detour in place, as crews continued to work late into the day to clear the scene of at least 45 passenger vehicles and about 15-20 Commercial Motor Vehicles.
Video posted to social media showed stranded motorists making their way through the mangled metal of crushed cars. Semi-trucks transporting Hefe beer, chips and other food products had been split open in the crash, their contents spilling out
School buses from Eugene have arrived on the scene to assist in relocating 30-40 stranded motorists to Pioneer Villa at exit 216.
DEQ and HAZMAT are responding to approximately 6 of the CMVs that are leaking fluids onto the roadway.
The foggy conditions were made worse by the high humidity combined with the wildfires in Washington state. Today was forecast to be the final day of unseasonable heat for Western Oregon, local weather forecasters said.
Dozens of wildfires have plagued Western U.S. states in recent years, as climate change exacerbates drought patterns.
This is turn has dried out trees and other plants to make fuel as warm temperatures and high winds provide dangerous conditions for fires to grow

I am about 20 miles east of Halsey, Or right now. This is the first I’ve heard of any big pile-up on I-5 this morning, but I know exactly where this accident happened. There have been a few major pile-ups there before.
Hwy 34, the only route between Lebanon and Corvallis (home of Oregon State Univ.), runs just to the north of Halsey. It is a major commuter route, and people drive way too fast. I’d lay money that the initial accident happened at one of the I-5 on/off-ramp merging lanes.
Sometime in the ‘90’s, I think, there was a similar pile-up, and a gasoline tanker involved exploded. The resulting fire literally burnt the asphalt pavement.

AZ is my second favorite state, you chose a good territory to live in. My father lives in Lake Havasu, which I hear is “Trump Country.”
I’ve always had a soft spot for the Southwest.

As I recall, people in the Bay Area couldn’t go outside for a few days two years ago when California fires sent their smoke south.
If you think about it, it’s not so crazy.
The energy buildup that precedes an earthquake can manifest multiple ways. He uses Short Infra Red satellite images to find hot spots that manifest in earthquake prone areas. Then he looks at a physical light satellite images to find actual fires. Not all hot spots create fires but some do.
Then he looks at the geography of where the hot spots and fires are occurring. And it’s usually along a fault line or former volcanos, or weak spots in the earth crust such as drill sites.
He traces deep earth earthquakes out in the south pacific and then predicts where these energy waves will produce additional earthquakes and when and what the magnitude will be.
Dutchsense has identified the hotspot phenomenon multiple times.
You should watch some of his videos some time.
Trees never burned until the past few years, I read it on the internet so it must be true.
Over here on the Idaho Panhandle we are happy the winds are blowing west! Usually they blow the smoke to us.
This looks like a good storm front moving in. Hopefully get the fires out.
Selective logging would be far more beneficial than selective burning. The USFS has a history of letting them get out of control.
And after Lake becomes governor, it makes it all the better...Can’t wait, in a few weeks the leftist will be doing the big chicken.
It was NOT caused by the smoke, ‘climate change’ or any other BS.
Heavy fog is common this time of year in the valley.
OSP was gutted by back-to-back dem administrations in this state and highway patrols to keep I5 safe are rare to nonexistent.
This crash event is all the evidence I need.
Heck evn here in Pa we have our share of thick foggy days. You’re lucky if you can see a street light let alone a car in front of you.
The fog along that stretch of I5 is well known to seasonally be as dense as you describe.
Oregon probably has the slowest drivers in the country.
I asked someone in OR why. They said...
“Our roots are coming here on the Oregon Trail. We tend to drive about the same speed”
Have you been to Vermont lately?
The state speed limit is 50, and most greenies who live in VT drive it.
