Cripplingly-shy autistic boy, 9, starts SPEAKING after thinking crowd chanting and waving flags saying 'Let's Go Brandon' were for him at Houston rodeo

The mother of an autistic nine-year-old named Brandon said he came out of his shell after seeing 'Let's Go Brandon' flags at a carnival and mistakenly believing they were for him.

In March Minnesota-based podcaster and author Sheletta Brundidge, her husband and her three youngest children, including her son Brandon, 9, who is severely autistic, made a stop during their Spring Break vacation at 'Sensory Friendly Day' at Houston's Livestock Show and Rodeo, The State reported.

Brundidge said during the trip her son told her that 'These people love me here!' They've got my flags all over the place. They're cheering for me!'

The mother of four was confused but later realized that her son had become fixated on flags mounted on different RVs which read: 'Let's Go Brandon!'- a national anti-Biden chant adopted by conservatives

In October NASCAR driver Brandon Brown, 28, unintentionally sparked the phrase after NBC sports reporter Kelli Stavast confused the crowd jeering 'F*** Joe Biden' for 'Let's Go Brandon!' at a NASCAR event in Alabama

But despite the actual meaning behind the flags, Brundidge said the slogan gave young Brandon a confidence boost that helped him battle his social anxiety and Brundidge even captured her son and two younger siblings, who are also autistic, in the back of a golf cart happily singing 'Let's go, Brandon!'

Brandon, completely unaware of the politics behind the phrase, told his mom that to him 'It means to have courage and try your best

“told his mom that to him ‘It means to have courage and try your best”

Good kid. and remember Brandon, don’t be a child molesting, crackhead, stripper impregnating Biden when you grow up.

‘Brundidge even captured her son and two younger siblings, who are also autistic”...’

So this “podcaster and author” has 3 children who are suffering from a rare, non-genetic developmental disorder? I’m suspecting some Munchausen-by-proxy here.

It is a heartwarming story... I am curious so many of the kids in the family are “autistic”. Is it an environmental issue or heredity in this case? Or do they have a doctor who calls every kid autistic?

Sometimes children have labels applied which then become self-fulfilling prophesy. Public schools get increased revenue for every child “identified.”

At a elementary school open-house, his second grade teacher thought he couldn’t be attentive.

I asked where his seat was assigned: his desk was in the last row & last seat. I asked why she had assigned him that seat instead of up in the front if she thought he was distracted. She replied that was for the boys that misbehaved.

I asked if my son was disrespectful or caused any disturbance in class?

She answered, “Who John? Never”

Well, I smiled and replied, “Every paper he brings home has an ‘A.’ He is not disrespectful & doe not cause any disturbance in class. So, I guess I’m not concerned.”

My son is now in Mensa.

“Brandon, 9, who is severely autistic,” but more mentally alert than the other Brandon that everyone hates.

This disorder is no longer rare. In fact it is quite common ever since the mid-1990’s. It is still increasing and, if not stopped, will become an overwhelming burden to our medical system.

There are a number of genes associated with autism. Germline mutations in PTEN, for instance, are associated with autism.

That being said there is an epidemic, and there is no such thing as a genetic epidemic. Therefore there must be something in the environment that causes certain genotypes to result in autistic phenotypes.

One pretty well established cause is lack of vitamin D3, as evidenced by the high rate in Africans who immigrated to Minnesota. Being dark they do not produce enough vitamin D3 in the short winter days there. They refer to autism as the “Minnesota disease”.

Another statistical correlation but not causation is the use of organophosphates in agriculture. In the 1990’s the US Government started allowing organophosphate application to crops before harvest. It’s called the “Green Burn”.

The result is high organophosphate load in children and adults. The hypothesis for development of autism is a severe disruption in the gut bacteria and production of endotoxins which lead to microglia polarization and inflammation of the nervous system.

If you can find the environmental trigger for autism and explain why this accounts for the worldwide increase in autism rates you will pick up your Nobel Prize in Sweden in a few years.

NBC sports reporter Kelli Stavast confused the crowd jeering

I thought it was a "quick on her feet" response to get through the segment and that she was aware of what was being said. I could be wrong, of course.

Yah, I had an older brother who was severely autistic. He would never look anyone in the eye and would plug his ears with his fingers. He never spoke in his life, much less read.

I guess severely autistic means something different now than it did in the 60s.

They've broadened autism to include half of the population in the world...My friend's grandson....At first they said he wouldn't look at you when he talked...then they said loud noises bothered him...

And soon after, he started playing the trumpet.

And why would you expect some kid who was busy playing to look you square in the eye.

A friend and wife got called in...daughter was ADHD...wanted her to go on meds.

My friends told the school to stick it. The Lady is an MD and a top doc in a well known hospital.

Bottom line...it is in most cases...all about the money the school gets AND the additional counselors.

“This disorder is no longer rare. In fact it is quite common ever since the mid-1990’s.”

Well, I think there are 2 factors at play here. One is that the historical diagnosis of “autism” is not equivalent to the modern diagnosis of “autism spectrum disorder”, so you are comparing apples to oranges if you go back decades. Second, there are studies that have shown diagnoses increase like a social contagion; once someone with a pre-existing diagnosis of autism enters a peer group, the number of diagnoses of other people in the peer group increases.

“If you can find the environmental trigger for autism...”

Socialization is also a part of the environment. Not everything in the environment is chemical, and in fact, for many, and probably most development disorders, the enviromental “trigger” is more behavioral or related to parenting than it is to chemicals, diet, etc.

But all of that is kind of irrelevant if many of the diagnoses are false diagnoses to begin with. You could search all day for a common link, and if the common link is doctors overdiagnosing a condition for people who are not actually suffering it, you will never find the link until you look at the doctors instead of the patients.
