Drivers attempting to cheat in the HOV lanes in Washington over the years have tried a variety of tactics to fool state troopers.
Once such driver was caught in the act Monday, after dressing a fake skeleton in a hoodie and buckling it into the front seat.
The fake passenger was highlighted by Washington State Trooper Rick Johnson on Twitter, who caught the offending driver on southbound I-405 near Coal Creek.

In the past, drivers have attempted to pull similar HOV lane ploys with dolls, mannequins, dirty laundry, and, in one case, an inflatable Ruth Bader Ginsburg donning a North Seattle Community College sweatshirt.
It became enough of an issue on the state’s roadways that, in 2019, lawmakers passed a bill tacking on an additional $200 fine to HOV violators who use dummies, dolls, or any other form of fake people.
That’s on top of the $186 fine for first-time HOV offenders, and $336 for multiple offenders.
I am opening a solicitation for public support for the psychiatric treatment I will need for my PTSD after reading that. Even a case of good single malt is going to run a grand.
Here in Phoenix I have abused the Tesla Lane many times to get to the airport in a hurry. Stupid law.
My question has always been: since these lanes are for carpooling or high occupancy how come a pregnant woman can use those lanes?

Use REAL skeleton in the HOV lanes.

This is the worst stretch of a miserable highway system in Washington state. I can’t tell you how many times I (illegally) used the breakdown (HOV) lanes on that exact spot. Never got caught and never resorted to dummies.
If a man can be a woman, and a woman can be a man, why can’t a skeleton be a passenger?
A manikin with covid mask and sunglasses would work better. Might not even need the part below the waist.
I drove from Miami to Seattle with a great big teddy bear wearing a man’s hat in the seat beside me. Kind of a joke, and those who noticed laughed and gave me thumbs up.
