Thirty years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, a significant majority of Russians continue to feel nostalgia for their country’s communist past, according to a recent survey from the country’s leading independent polling agency.
In the Levada Center’s poll, published on Friday, 63 percent of Russian respondents expressed regret over the breakup of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) in 1991. The sentiment was strongest among Russians aged 55 and older, 84 percent of whom described the dissolution as a tragic event.
By contrast, a mere 28 percent of respondents said that they did not regret the demise of the Soviet Union.
The only demographic group in which a majority of respondents did not mourn the event was that of Russians aged 18 to 24.
The Levada Center based its results on a survey of more than 1,600 adults across Russia between November 25 and December 1.
Early last week, a group of Russian lawmakers introduced a bill that would designate the collapse of the USSR as “the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century.” […]

Indeed the media and democrats fail to grasp why it fails.
West Germany’s de-Nazification died a quick death after the leftists running the US back then handed the process to Adenauer, who declared it “over” a mere three years afterwards.
Obviously, no real de-Nazification happened in East Germany either what with the similarity to Stalinist “socialism in one country”.
The same leftists who degraded (and nigh destroyed) the USA’s manufacturing strength by trade with and “outsourcing” to Red China would of course have zero interest in de-communizing the former USSR when it fell in 1991.
Some of the Russians miss the ‘good old days’ of the USSR when Moscow sucked the life out of their slave states in order to sustain their unsustainable communist state. When their slave states started demanding and obtaining their freedom back on the 1980’s the Soviet Russians discovered that they no longer had the conventional military power to put down the various independence movements.
Thus the Soviet Empire toppled like a Jenga tower when their slaves realized that the Russians no longer had the will or the ability to hold them in thrall.
And then the Soviet state itself crumbled when it could no longer use the resources of its former slave states to sustain the massive Soviet bureaucracy.
It’s amazing the parallels with the decline and fall of the Roman Empire. Especially that the fall of the world’s most oppressive empire started in earnest in 1989 and it wrapped up in 1991. In two years the Soviet Russian state collapsed from its own arrogance, hubris, rot, and apathy.
Now the Russians pine away for what they thing are the glory days of the USSR when in fact what they want is to be able to pillage other countries and other people for their own selfish needs.
On the other side of this are the people opposed to the nationalists who want Russia to become a peaceful and modern free country. I think the world of the Russian people and think that if they were freed of the fatalism that attached itself to the Russian psyche under communism that the Russian people would be industrious, prosperous, and free.
But for now the nation is still under the control of the last holdouts of the Soviet regime who care less for their people and more for their personal wealth and power.
Still, I think people like Putin are accomplishing a few positive things that only such people can accomplish. In the long run I hope that people like Putin are setting the stage for a Russian renaissance in this century.
There is no hope for that.
I think they miss their empire not communism.

Hey, I remember spending the 80’s preparing to fight an apocalyptic war with the USSR and even then we had hope that things would work out. And they did.
So I have good reason to believe the Russians can appeal to their better spirits and to make Russia into a modern, prosperous, free, and (dare I say) happy country.

I totally agree that the current leadership is retrograde. However, they are accomplishing things for Russian society that a true republic would find problematic. Rebuilding churches, bringing religion back into daily life, purging the drug addicts, purging the sexual deviants, these are all things that can’t be done by a liberal government.
Thus I am hopeful that the current regime will lay a solid foundation for a free Russian society to prosper upon.
The KPRF in Russia is a fake opposition party. Zyuganov has tremendous power in Russia.
The paranoia in Russia, or more specifically Communist Russia predated Hitler. In fact, you could argue that Lenin himself set up that paranoia, bare minimum.
In any case, I’ll believe Russia’s gotten rid of Communism only AFTER they’ve taken down Lenin’s mausoleum, they’ve taken down Karl Marx’s statue, and made sure the Communist Party is extinct in that country, and all that that implies.

Yeah, and besides, in the case of Communism and the French Revolution, George Santayana was dead wrong regarding this bit. Karl Marx certainly remembered the past regarding the French Revolution and all the gore that entailed, and if anything his memory of that past is what drove him to repeat it.
Heck, haven’t you noticed that around the same time the West is tearing down its statues, they’re replacing them with not just Stalin statues, but Lenin statues as well?

Actually, Wilson helped bankroll those guys into power, as did the Kaiser and Britain. And besides, Lenin himself made it VERY clear they were doing it just to rehash the Jacobins. He just wanted chaos among the populace. Lenin was a psychopath, and wished to just spread Communism by force even when everyone sided with him, truly getting his high on hurting as many people as possible per all Marxist views.
And if you read some of Karl Marx’s statements, you’d realize paranoia was a key feature to Marxism. In fact, he specifically created Marxism as an excuse to reenact the worst aspects of the French Revolution, the Reign of Terror more specifically, and make it an even gorier event.
Communism is based on exploiting Envy, one of the Seven Deadly Sins.
