Tens of millions of dirty, used, and counterfeit nitrile gloves - some of them stained with blood - have been shipped to the United States from Thailand in recent months as fraudsters look to take advantage of the surge in demand for medical equipment due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
An investigation conducted by CNN has found that Thai companies are repackaging used gloves and reselling them worldwide, including in the US, where federal authorities are only beginning to understand the scope of the crisis.
Earlier this year, Thai law enforcement agencies raided warehouses of companies who sold reused nitrile gloves abroad. Workers at the warehouses used dye to color the used gloves and laundry dryers to dry them after washing.
In February and March, a US company warned the Biden administration that it had received shipments with visibly soiled gloves from a company based in Thailand.
The warning was issued to both Customs and Border Protection as well as the Food and Drug Administration.
In order to meet the emergency demand, the federal government lifted important regulations at the height of the pandemic - enabling the shipments of defective gloves to enter the country.
As supply dwindled, fraudsters found an opportunity to take advantage by selling soiled, second-hand gloves at a profit to governments and hospitals that were running desperately low on medical grade nitrile gloves.
In the US, the FDA has banned the use of powdered latex gloves.
Medical grade nitrile gloves are produced mostly in south and east Asia using natural rubber.
The factories that produce the gloves use highly specialized manufacturing processes and expertise, making it difficult to ramp up supply in a short period of time.
That created a void filled by shady businesses looking to turn a quick profit selling bogus gloves.

I stopped in to Walmart to pick up some more TP last week and found men’s winter cold-weather rain-resistant jackets on close-out for $1 each. And surprise, surprise, they actually had Large sizes, so I snagged two. Perfect for yard work! I was absolutely shocked at the $1 price.
Ewwww!
I guess masks will be next!
if you can launder money, you can launder and press masks
maybe ?
Covid is so deadly, that we just discard masks and gloves all over the country.
Now, get your shot or you’re fired pissant!...
Last year I saw a documentary where they showed workers in China were washing, drying and ironing medical masks and reselling them.
You can’t convince me swabs are being infected with COVID to keep this thing going.
Well, it’s called going green - RECYCLE!
Next it will be Kleenex and toilet paper...
Hankies will be back in style.
Do you remember the used condoms? https://www.cbsnews.com/news/vietnam-condom-recycling-police-raid-factory-used-resale/
fedgov warned in february & did NOTHING for many months ... probably too busy celebrating “Pronoun Month” or something ...
There have been warnings across Thailand since the beginning of this panic-demic about unscrupulous people washing and re-selling masks and gloves (mostly masks tbh).
I’ve seen vendors on the side of the road selling the “gently used” stuff and it’s patently obvious which are the new masks/gloves and which are the used ones.
Best advice (from one who lives in Thailand): if you see a deal on Amazon or Alibaba that is too good to be true, it probably is.
My local Walmart also has some startlingly good clearance deals. Perhaps it has to do with the store being remodeled — lots of odds and ends to clear out.
If the Covid infections cease think of all the poor mask maker who will be without a job! Think of their families! Their lively hoods depend on you being sick!
So stay sick to help those families!
Interesting...this Walmart in Hayden, Idaho is being remodeled right now. That makes sense. These jackets I picked up are amazing — just perfect for yard work.
But I feel a bit guilty because some poor folks could have used them. We are going to donate a bunch of jackets to the local school kids jacket drive.
If they ran them through a gamma box then they are sterile, even if not clean.
But who wants a bloody glove...ewww
Before Covid I used to buy 100 count Harbor Freight 5 mil nitrile gloves all the time when they went on sale for $5.99. Now those same gloves are $16.99, down from $17.99. Fortunately, I probably have a 5 to 10 year supply.
Used condom harvesting....a logistical intrigue.
Okay then; I ordered supplies to make medical grade masks, several months ago. I probably should get out my sewing machine and make them.
Well, you can make something like this:
Or like this:
Or even like this:
I have no problems spotting the fake recycled ones over here. I think as long as you avoid unbelievable prices on Amazon you'll be just fine.
Oh for Christs sake, this is total bs. I work in a hospital ER and this is simply not the case. For cryin’ out loud my hospital uses boxes of gloves from at least three different brands, all of it clean and sanitary.
There’s a rule with ANYTHING in a hospital:If it hit’s the floor it’s no good anymore.
All of any hospital ‘’wet trash’’, that is non-biological trash, and that includes gloves goes into a trash compacter.
Yeah, uh huh. Some Chink is going through compacted garbage and taking out the gloves.
Cardboard goes into a cardboard compacter and biological waste including blood vials, bloody gauze and even body parts are disposed in ‘’red bags’, clearly marked and kept separate from the other trash and is either put into hardened plastic bins and sealed or it’s packed up in heavy cardboard boxes labeled and disposed of by a licensed contractor. Used syringes(’’sharps) are disposed of in heavy plastic containers as well. They’re never mixed in with any other trash. It’s the law.
People who print this bs need an ass kicking for spreading fear porn.
The whole COVID pandemic is based on fear porn.
The whole push the vax and ignore natural immunity is based on fear porn.
If the fear porn surrounding the alleged pandemic were not pushed so relentlessly, there wouldn’t be the issue with masks and gloves because nobody would be using them, just like every other flu season going.
