A Dutch family triggered a police intervention after officers discovered them sailing in a car converted into a watercraft on a river in southern Germany.
The police were puzzled after they saw a vacationer, his wife and their four children sailing in their amphibious vehicle on the Schwarzer Regen River in Viechtach, Bavaria, about 177 kilometers (110 miles) northeast of Munich.
Local media reported that the officers received a call regarding a “strange vessel” that was about to enter Hollensteinsee Lake. They immediately went to evaluate the situation at around 1 p.m. on July 30.
After they saw the family sailing on the river in the amphibious vehicle, the officers borrowed an electric boat from a private individual in order to chase down the group.
The chase soon came to a halt as their borrowed electric watercraft’s battery died.
The police were left in the middle of the river and called the Viechtach water rescue service.
With the help of the water rescue service, officers were able to overtake the family’s boat near the village of Pirka.
An inspection revealed that the amphibious craft had an electric engine, not a gas-powered motor. Police told the family that motorized boats are generally not allowed on the river and prepared a report citing several violations of the water and navigation law, according to local reports. The family then removed their vehicle from the water

Sounds like a Monty Python skit.

And this is why smart cops don’t use electric vehicles.
Not like a police chase on the highway.
They can’t throw down those spiked roadblocks used to bust tires.
Almost backed into a cop near Viechtach 50 years ago.
Missed the shift on a BMW 1802 at a stop sign, ended up in Reverse. Sis caught my mistake before I backed into the Polizei who were sitting behind me, splitting a gut at my inability to get moving.
Only in Germany would they get bent about a humorous thing like a family driving their cool amphib into the river. To live there is to hate the wet blanket known as their society.
“Police told the family that motorized boats are generally not allowed on the river “
I had no idea that Germans couldn’t fully enjoy their rivers/lakes for recreation. Yes, unusual craft, but I’m not seeing a problem (unless under German law the children require life jackets).
So can we expect this declaration as well from EPA in coming months/years?
I wish that was sarcasm...
+1
So the police chase ensued because the family was on a strange boat? Is it the police’s job to investigate strange? Now if they were concerned about safety, or the boat did not have the proper registration maybe, but just strange?
Jupiter 2 Family Robinson. ;-)
Maybe they could use a spiked fish?

Never bring an electric boat to a boat race.
A lot of effort by the police to issue a ticket. But then I guess the police everywhere are enforcing nonsense because their political masters don’t want them actually defending their communities.
Their concern may have been whether the watercraft was powered by either Gas or Electric power?
One of those is apparently the wrong method.
Maybe they heard the Amphib/Car, didn’t know what the heck it was and wanted to find out once and for all.
It still seems unnecessarily NOSY.
That should work. It looks like a solution that would be applied in a Disney cartoon.
There would be a ballad called: Sea Urchin’s Lament.
Given it was Germany maybe the just wanted to see their papers.
I was leaving a car swap meet years ago and a guy had a restorable Amphicar 770 sitting on his trailer that had not sold and he was motivated to sell and I had the cash in my pocket.
I’m still kicking myself.
