A claimed 70 percent of electric car buyers said they would miss the smell of gas when switching to a plug-in vehicle. This is according to Ford, which to promote its upcoming Mach-E GT has created a fragrance intended to smell like petroleum.
Yes, you read that correctly and no, today is not the first of April. Ford goes on to say the smell of gasoline ranked as a more popular scent than wine and cheese, and was almost identical to the aroma of used books, according to its own research.
Called Mach-Eau (because of course it is) Ford says the fragrance is “designed to please the nose of any wearer; a high-end fragrance that fuses smokey accords, aspects of rubber and even an ‘animal’ element to give a nod to the Mustang heritage.”
Ford there, eager to avoid saying its new fragrance smells like horse.
Clearly, I would be falling short as a journalist if I didn’t try the fragrance for myself. A sample arrived in the mail the very next day, although sadly not in the gas pump-style bottle used to promote the fragrance. And, well, it smells pretty nice. It isn’t intended for sale so can’t actually be used, but the sample bottle sits on my desk and gets the occasional sniff.

Have you smelled like a Ford Lately ?
My thoughts exactly. They could put it in one of those Glade electric scent dispensers that would be built into the Tesla charging stations. It would be great for people in the future to be able to remember what common sense and freedom smelled like while they were “saving the planet”.
Ethanol free scent available?
How about diesel for the trucker?
I thought this was the B.
I wouldn’t trust anything made by Ford. And that includes Doug Ford too.
Have you driven a Ford lately?

I miss those style car commericals.
Just shaking my dang head.
What next? Bush’s Baked Beans making a fragrance to smell like gaseous digestive system release??
But then there is that hollywood actress that sells candles that supposedly smell like her ‘front hole’, so I guess anything goes these days.
He was great!
I loved Joe Isuzu.
David Leisure.
My dad had a Chevy LUV - an Isuzu truck with a Chevy badge. A few days ago I saw one going down I77 south. The first LUV I’d seen in I don’t know how long.
“I didn’t know you had bought a new car!”
😏
I just took delivery of a Mach e. Really like it.
Yeah, no need to “remember” what gas smells like. I still fill up my other cars, lawn mower, etc.
They all rusted away.
Add electronic V8 sound effect and the scent of burnt octane booster.
Or...find a way to closepin a playing card to a wheel.
Slightly off topic, but I love the smell of my 50s era jukebox when it’s warmed up. I guess it’s mostly the odor of the lubrication warmed by the heat of the tubes etc.
Somebody has been sniffing too many gasoline fumes and I’m a Motörhead
Yes, but will it work in 2 stroke engines better than the ethanol crap gas?
/sarc
I wonder what they will have for those of us whose olfactory sense is still scrambled by a bout of COVID. Gasoline doesn’t smell like it used to, but then neither do skunks. Life is full of trade offs.
I prefer the smell of asphalt... if you have ever worked around it everything smells and tastes like asphalt for about 11 days
