'I'm Black and I don't wanna use it': African in Singapore on locals asking him if they can use the N-word

As an African who grew up in Singapore, a contentious topic which Alvin Philemon Makundi has had to navigate around is the N-word and who has the ‘right’ to use it.

For the unacquainted, the N-word refers to a derogatory ethnic slur used against Black people or those of African descent. The degree of offensiveness is increased due to its historical links to slavery.

Despite this, the 22-year-old son of Tanzanian immigrants would often receive questions from Singaporeans on whether he'll grant them access to use the N-word freely.

Alarmingly, it's some of the teens and young adults here who think that using the N-word is trendy and cool.

On Tuesday (May 18), Makundi decided it was time to nip this issue in the bud and address it by posting a video on his Twitter and TikTok channels.

“Why do people feel the need to have the 'N pass'? Like what’s the point of it? The only reason you wanna use it is to seem cool,” he said.

He went on to explain why the N-word should not be seen as something that is cool or desirable.

“The things that a lot of Black people have gone through, it’s not cool. I don’t get why you’d find it cool. That word has so much weightage and history behind it,” Alvin said.

Even him and his sisters, they made a conscious choice to not use the N-word as they felt 'unqualified' to do so.

Makundi went on to say that if he were to use the word regularly, what would likely happen is his friends following suit, thinking there’s nothing wrong with using the N-word.

He ended his one-minute video with an honest question to his followers: I'm black and I don't even wanna use it, why do wanna use it? I don't get it."

The word “Negro” used to be a common term to refer to blacks. Martin Luther King used the word openly in his speeches.

In fact NEGRO is the Spanish word for black. How and when did it become a bad word?

I think no one should use the n-word. It is a racial slur. Blacks especially shouldn’t use it.

“As an African who grew up in Singapore”

You are not BLACK enough.

“...his unique position as a young African man growing up and living in Singapore.”

What would he know about the Black/AA culture in the USA?

NOTHING!

There you go, an n-word with an attitude.

Wait a second! That’s a great name for a band.

Originally used to replace “colored people” in polite society, it became a bad word when some race baiting hustler decided to take offense and preferred to be called “black”...which was later replaced by “African-American”...which has recently been replaced by “people of color”... soon to revert back to “colored people”

Reminds me of the interview I saw of a protestor at a local NYC high school* back in the 60s. Student was asked why she thought the principle of the school was not sensitive to the wants, needs and/or desires of minority students as he was black himself.
She replied, “He not black!!!! He a neeeeegro.”

They can get away with it, but that doesn't make it OK. Ask any of the African American Christian preachers who are trying to propagandize stopping it already (and not succeeding).

If it's degrading, it's more degrading to apply it to oneself.

Words are just tools and there are no bad tools, just unskilled tool users and/or inappropriate uses.

Anybody who thinks you can type (or say) "the N-Word" and everybody who reads (or hears) it doesn't immediately hear the rude word in their head is an idiot. Thinking it's somehow less offensive is idiotic.

Euphemisms are anathema, and this is the king of anathemas.

When the black subculture and the Race-Baiting Poverty Pimps agree to let me designate the words I don't want used in my presence, then we have grounds for the opening of negotiations. But if you think this is a unilateral decision, that you can set the diktats and I must comply, you are every bit as stupid and bigoted as your anti-white racist rants make you sound.
