What is a pronoun?

Pronouns are some of the most useful words in the English language. They are used in the place of a noun to avoid it having to be named twice. For example: Suzy threw the boomerang and it came back to her. In this sentence, "it" is a pronoun that represents the boomerang, and "her" is a pronoun that refers to Suzy. Without pronouns, we'd have to say Suzy threw the boomerang and the boomerang came back to Suzy. Without pronouns, how would we even say "we"?

Here's the full definition. Definition of Pronoun In English, the part of speech used as a substitute for an antecedent noun that is clearly understood, and with which it agrees in person, number, and gender. Pronouns are classified as personal (I, we, you, he, she, it, they), demonstrative (this, these, that, those), relative (who, which, that, as), indefinite (each, all, everyone, either, one, both, any, such, somebody), interrogative (who, which, what), reflexive (myself, herself), possessive (mine, yours, his, hers, theirs). There are also pronominal adjectives, sometimes called possessive adjectives (my, your, his, her, our, their).

If the “English” has 500,000 words, 100 pronouns seems a bit light. Unless we are talkin’ gender....

Wow, that’s a nice list. A trip down memory lane to school days. I myself had forgotten all those categories. 🙃

Of course there are a lot of pronouns. But when everyone can pick and choose their own it will be confusing. “Suzy threw the boomerang and they caught it when it came back to them, causing them to break their wrist”.

Clearly that is a list of the white Supremacist patriarchy, it does not include common pronouns like xir, xe, and xim.

And personally, my pronouns are “His Majesty, your Majesty, your Majesty’s.”

If you don’t use my pronouns, you’re clearly a horrible bigot.

I thought this was going to be about made-up words for those with sexual confusion. Thank goodness, no. It is very useful for grammar geeks and others who might want to think more about how English works. I teach ESL and am going to save it as something for my advanced students to use.

That pronoun list is such a holdover from a patriarchal, bigoted, systemically racist heritage. Obviously, not everyone has embraced the new illumination.

I talked to someone who answered the phone at an insurance company, one who advertises nightly on the networks.

Me: “Can I speak to John Doe?

Person on phone: “They are not in their office just now.” I had noticed that John Doe sounded a little light in the loafers.

Of course the unspoken point was the new pervert pronouns.

They’re considered archaic

There are several pronouns that have fallen out of common usage but appear frequently in older texts, so there is still a good chance that you will encounter them. “Thee” is an old word for “you” used only when addressing one person, while “thy” is an old word for “your.” “Thine” indicates the one or ones belonging to thee.

thou
thee
thy
thine
ye

You were doing so well keeping to your three pronoun ration until you found a fourth one six words later.
