China’s absence of compulsory sex education in schools blamed for woman’s late discovery The woman tried to fall pregnant in the previous 12 months; she now has to decide her gender identity
A 25-year-old woman in eastern China, who failed to fall pregnant after 12 months of trying, was shocked to discover she was actually born male and is intersex.
The woman, whose external female genitalia never forced her to question her sex, stumbled upon the discovery after an X-ray of her injured ankle was taken in a hospital in her hometown.
When the X-ray revealed that her bones had not developed past the age of adolescence, the doctor’s further probing uncovered the fact that Pingping, whose name has been changed to protect her identity, had never menstruated. She said she’d turned a blind eye to it out of embarrassment.
“When I was young my mum took me to the doctor. The doctor said I was just developing slower than others sexually, and that I could have my period in a few years,” she told the local doctor.
“After I grew up, I found this issue quite embarrassing so I didn’t treat it seriously.”
Despite the lack of menstruation, Pingping had no reason to suspect she was anything other than a biological woman because she had external female genitalia, the First Affiliated Hospital of College of Medicine, Zhejiang University said in a statement posted on WeChat this week.
During a visit to an endocrinologist at the hospital, Pingping said, “My husband and I have been trying to have a baby for a year although it’s been in vain. Is that also related [to my bone age and absence of a period]?”
Test results indicated that she suffered from high blood pressure and low blood potassium,

Yep, the ones who are truly intersex with the mixed chromosomes are completely sterile.
Yes, a bad hand and some ambiguous wedding tackle.
Hard to believe some people actually want to mimic this poor fate.
I’m wondering how a doc goes from looking at an ankle issue to ah “checking under the hood” ... ???
Imagine being in a prearranged marriage and finding out one of you is intersex.
“she was actually born male and is intersex.”
Wait, what? She’s either one sex or “intersex’ whatever that is. Not both.
These articles are garbage.
DNA test can inform on her congenital condition.
If she’s lived as a woman, married normally she’s a woman who can’t have children.
A hermaphrodite has male and female chromosomes/traits. It’s sad.
Well, it says they discovered her bones weren’t fully developed, like she was stuck at age 14. A good general practitioner would, *ahem* ‘look into it a little more deeply’, if you get my drift. You know, check the oil while you get your flat fixed. I’ll refrain from the inevitable GFY jokes.
She has XY chromosomes, thus male, but not the usual male organs. It’s complicated for some people. Most of us, not.
Sounds like androgen insensitivity syndrome.
He has XY chromosomes.
Therefore, I wouldn't take this story at face value.
People who have complete AIS (androgen insensitivity syndrome) look ultra-feminine, ie, they have no body hair, they’re thin and tall and not prone to weight gain, etc.. They’re infertile as men, but can have vaginal intercourse in a completely normal, natural way. A man who marries someone with CAIS might never know he has married a man if he doesn’t care to have children.
According to a 1998 New York Times article, girls with AIS “often grow into unusually beautiful women, with long legs, clear skin, ample breasts and thick hair; a number of famous models and actresses are thought to have androgen insensitivity syndrome. Yet women with AIS do not menstruate, and aren’t fertile.”
She has a y chromosome. Sounds like possible androgen insensitivity syndrome. An unborn baby will develop genitalia that are externally female unless the testes produce testosterone and the cells react to it.
Such people usually never know they are not female XX until they seek treatment for amenorrhea or infertility.
SCMP is over a century old, Hong Kong based, and used to be owned by Newscorp. I'm not saying it's perfect, but it isn't Global Times. I'm not sure what the angle would be on this particular story.
Must’ve been SOME dislocated ankle
As to what their angle would be, I have no idea. That said, I don't trust ANYTHING the CCP says. Their use of the press is, first and foremost, to spread propaganda. Even when it tells the truth, the CCP is working an angle.
Literally the FOURTH sentence in the EXCERPT!
