The death rate among hospitalized coronavirus patients is almost three times higher than those with the flu, new research has found.
Researchers compared French national data for 89,530 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in March and April this year with 45,819 patients hospitalized with seasonal influenza between December 2018 and the end of February 2019.
Some 16.9% of hospitalized COVID-19 patients died during the period of study. This compares to a death rate of 5.8% among those with cases of influenza severe enough to require care in a hospital.
Researchers found that more patients with COVID-19 needed intensive care — 16.3% compared with 10.8% for influenza— while the average stay in intensive care was nearly twice as long at 15 days compared to eight days.
The research, published in the journal the Lancet Respiratory Medicine, contradicts US President Donald Trump and Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro who respectively likened the deadly virus to the flu and “a measly cold.” …

Probably not too far off. And the elderly who have not yet succumbed to the virus will be culled by the vaccine.
“with COVID” not “because of COVID”
Bovine Excrement!
3 times a very small number is a very small number...
This is just fear mongering.
What flu? COVID19 eradicated all strains of flu.
Sure, it’s deadlier if you’re already old and sick. For the young, it’s the weak sister.
So, it’s a bad flu.
Look at the total number of deaths each year. For the US, I have looked at total number of deaths by year starting in 2010. The 2020 deaths through mid-December are not different from any of the previous years. If there was an extra 200k deaths, it would be shown in the overall death number. It simply is not there.
As for hospitalization rates, I would love to see something similar - total number of ICU beds available by year, and percent utilized. I would strongly bet there cannot be seen in the numbers any uptick. Same as deaths.
It stands to reason that a new disease would have a higher mortality rate than diseases that have been around forever and for which vaccines have long been available. And it looks like this study relied on data from last spring, when the mortality rate was higher than it is now.
Utter garbage.
Totally bogus numbers.
my 98-year-old mother was admitted to the hospital late Sunday night and died 5 hours later early Monday morning. She had a long history of congestive heart failure and afib. The doctor said he thought she died of a heart attack because her blood test showed that her heart-related enzymes were out of whack. He also said she tested positive for COVID when she was admitted. My bet is that she’ll be added to the COVID death toll.
When I saw that the study relied on old data, and made a point of criticizing Trump and Bolsonaro, my BS meter went wild.
The legislatures have to own this crap.. granting executives authority without oversight... always equals abuse.
Pa And Mi are perfect examples... no check at all on what their governors can do once the laws are triggered
Yesterday I stopped at a Barnes & Noble on my way to a doctor appointment (I was way early because the traffic was lighter than I thought it would be). I selected two magazines, and slipped them under the plexiglass barrier to the female clerk. She scanned the top magazine and then asked me to move it aside so she should scan the other one. That’s how paranoid some people have become.
I’m sorry for your loss of a parent, but 98 really is a good run, I suppose, if she had not been suffering terribly toward the end.
Do you have a link? Last time I tried CDC was making the data to calculate “excess deaths” hard to access.
LOL!
