Endgame of the Government Shutdown? (Vanity)
January 13, 2019 | Me

It's been almost a month. So how is this going to end? Who will "win"?

If DC families start sledding on the Capital Hill I wonder if Nancy and Chuck will call out the Capital police and arrest people like in the past.

Trump would not go into a negotiation like this without fully crafted contingencies all figured out.

I strongly suspect this ...

Trump knows exactly the worst parts of the border crossing. He offers the Dems a $4B compromise wall proposal that is only truly 85% wall construction. He very specifically details where the money will go and why the spending covers an emergency. They likely reject. He makes this public and asks again. They reject again.

Then he declares a $3B emergency wall fund that is 100% brick and mortar construction at the very, very worst junctures and reopens the government. He identifies exactly where these are and why they are needed to stem a specific emergency. Dems sue. He wins. With the precedent established, he declares another $1B in late 2019 or 2020 and tells Americans that they must re-elect him to get the rest.

Democrats impeach him. Senate stands behind him. His standing in the polls is rock solid.

Meanwhile by August Trump:

1) has just chosen another SCOTUS justice in to replace either RBG or (if she holds on) Clarence Thomas. Massive, massive battle. Trump wins around Labor Day even though he has been impeached. The world is in shock.

2) pushed Maduro out in Venezuela, successfully backfills the US position in Syria to protect gains there, and has Iran on the brink.

3) has continued to keep NKorea on a slow simmer ... maybe improving but surely not substantially worse.

4) has advanced talks with China to the point where he can take huge wins just by saying YES to a deal — and yet he bides his time, insisting on more.

5) has still not received a final report from Mueller, who by this point is losing nearly all credibility even with Democrats.

6) still enjoys a nearly 3% annual growth rate in GDP, unemployment stable and below 4% even as the labor force participation rate continues to rise, inflation of around 2% and an overall healthy US economy.

Part of the Dem strategy is to make Trump exhaust all of his political capital on this wall fight; and to extend this fight out so that he cannot get anything else done.

Trump will not fall for this. He is talking compromise, expediency, etc; and so while he will insist on walking away with a deal that includes wall funding, he will keep everything else moving right along.

No intention to weaponize the IRS. I am merely doing an analysis on contracts and the distribution of funds for that contract.

It is hard to say right now. The SHTF when money runs out for food stamps though.

Shut it down, until they join the people they’ve been blaming and adding insult to. ...sidewalks, cardboard,... Let them join the poorest of the private sector, who were deposed by them. It was stupid and wrong to shut down so much manufacturing here while increasing big government spending, and the reckoning will arrive one way or another. And one way or another, we’ll see men at work again.

Riiiiiight. Meanwhile back in reality that plan is called abuse of power and would get Trump impeached.

The Emergency will be tied up in the courts. Trump will keep it shut down even after he declares and Emergency. Not enough votes to override a veto.

Right now Senate Rs are scared of even taking a vote because they’ll get tossed out in 2020 if they vote against the Wall

“Yeah, weaponize the IRS like Dick Nixon, ..”

Obama did and it hardly made the news. It all depends upon who is doing the reporting.

So, what’s your take on it?

I think Democrats will refuse to budge an inch. Even if it starts Great Depression just so they'll blame it all on Trump.

Exactly—it’s a political Super Bowl or World Series——they are playing to win-——period.

Yeah, it's quite unfortunate. If I was President, I would had folded my hand. Y'all would blame me like y'all did with Bush lol.

I think they’ll eventually budge because their story doesn’t make sense - that’s why Nancy is ‘suggesting” President Trump bypasses the State of the Union Address and just turns in some written pages - he will use it as a Bully Pulpit and make sure they get all the attention they deserve. When they do cave, it will be with a lot of bluster and “because they care so much for those suffering so much from the evil trump Shutdown they had to do something...yada yada yada...

“end game” is going to be that someone will figure out Fed.gov still works with 20% fewer people

Bad move for Democrats. Especially with the shutdown going on for this long.
