WHEN STEPHANIE WILKINSON, the owner of the Red Hen restaurant in Lexington, Va., asked White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders to leave that dining establishment last Friday, she opened up yet another front in Americas ongoing cultural war.
Those on the right and some on the left have bemoaned the decline in civility reflected by Wilkinsons decision. Let the Trump team eat in peace, wrote the Washington Post editorial board, which expressed concern that justifying such incivility will leave only the most zealous to pursue a career in public service.
Kind of amazed and appalled by the number of folks on Left who applauded the expulsion of @PressSec and her family from a restaurant, tweeted former Obama campaign manager David Axelrod. This, in the end, is a triumph for @realDonaldTrump[s] vision of America: Now were divided by red plates & blue plates!
These arguments are understandable. Norm-shredding begets more norm-shredding; incivility begets more incivility, and it is anyones guess to where this path will lead us. The problem, however, is that we are already on a dangerous, anti-democratic road.
And Wilkinson in a singular act of civil, political protest has offered a useful, alternative path forward.
In an interview with the Washington Post, she said that several of her employees are gay and are bothered by Sanders defense of the presidents ban on transgender people serving in the military. Others are troubled by Sanders complicity with the White Houses monstrous family separation policy....

We can accept a vote from anybody.
Both sides of my family came to the Richmond colony in the 1650s. They traveled up the Chesapeake and settled in World’s End, just outside Church Creek. Parks and Foxwells still live there today. All remain patriots. As Anne is fond of saying, we are settlers, not immigrants.
WE OUT GUN, AND OUT SHOOT THEM.
They proudly boasted that their reservations were now full for several months, saying their rudeness helped their bottom line. Then they closed Saturday out of "fear" and it turned out that a lot of their new reservations were fake - presumably conservatives who booked a table for the purpose of not showing up. "Nice restaurant they had there. It would be a shame if that line of protest continued."
The restaurant acted within its rights, just as a baker in the same town could act within his right and refuse to make a cake for a gay wedding.
Show up anyway, demand to be seated. Cause a scene.
There are so many ways to make life miserable for these leftist bigots.
Then I’m guessing it would be acceptable to spit on obungo’s daughters or egg Hillary Clinton. Right?
Sounds like a known liberal leftist granola cruncher restaurant - Pretty sure they would look askance at anyone not wearing their "uniform" - Birkenstock sandals, gray haired ladies wearing sun dresses, men wearing leggings, lot full of Toyota Pious's.
Red Hen Mayo, now with extra AIDS!
It's got a little wang in it
Roger that, re: Target.
I used to shop there pretty much exclusively. Dry goods and groceries, both.
No more. There are two things that I cant get anywhere else, and Ive not found a decent replacement yet. So - I go back a couple of times a year to get those two specific things, and nothing else.
Went from hundreds a month, to a few 10s of dollars a year. And, I suspect that Im not the only one. Last time I checked, their stock had tanked.
My wife is not political in nearly any way. I told her why I don’t wish to patronize Target anymore, and she doesn’t really understand.
She wanted to buy me some shirts a while back at Target, and I said “I will pay more to buy them somewhere else, anywhere but Target.” I think she gets it now, because she doesn’t ask me about anything at Target anymore.
Before, I used to be just uninterested in Target. I could go there and buy something, but generally, didn’t go in the place just because I didn’t find it interesting or compelling, but if my wife saw something there, I would go with her.
Now, I actively avoid the place. When will they learn to JUST DO BUSINESS?
leftists will be leftists
‘took a vote’ of employees ...
when do they EVER do that for anything else ???
America ‘Took a Vote’ too.
Yeah, for me it wasnt so much the political stand that they took... I work every day with people whom I disagree. It was the arrogance of the management. Were doing this and youll like it, or else. Why they werent canned, from the top down, is beyond me. The Board must think the same way, all the better reason to avoid the stores.
Still, I darken their door about twice a year. Until I find a replacement for those two items, then Im done. Whats interesting is that the past couple of times Ive been in - once at Christmas and once recently- I had the place to myself. Could count the number of shoppers on two hands, certainly, and the checkers were just standing around talking. June?? Ok. But on a weekend in the middle of December? Place should have been mobbed.
On another thread I read that it is closed for business until the 5th of July.
