Three years ago, I made a commitment to watch only television shows that featured Black actors, writers, and directors.
More on that, but first you need to know my backstory.
Saved by the Bell was my favorite television show as a teenager, and Pretty in Pink one of my favorite movies. Although, it was probably Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Darks If You Leave on the films soundtrack that made me like it more than I might have otherwise. Saved by the Bells Zack Morris (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) was definitely my teenage heartthrob. The favorite part of my after-school routine was watching Zack, while doing homework. In my minds eye, I too attended the very nice and very colorblind Bayside High.
But Zack wasnt the first. There was Alex P. Keaton (Michael J. Fox), the fanatically conservative son in Family Ties, and Kirk Camerons portrayal of slacker/girl chaser Mike Seaver in Growing Pains, and Silver Spoons Ricky Stratton (Rick Schroder), the blonde rich kid with a winning smile.
I often pictured myself outside of my mostly Black life as a love interest for all of these stars. Never mind that not one of the shows ever gave me reason to think that I actually could be....

I learned early on that “all black actors” movies are not my cup of tea. They are speaking to a culture different than mine. I just can’t relate to the story line. I don’t watch anime for the same reason, though Akira was pretty good.
So, I guess The Cosby Show was out......................
I noticed in the nursing home that TV ONE (a black network) still carries it.
Of course.........................
Exactly!
Funny, but it hit me when I was trying to watch a mainstream movie that was trying to be culturally neutral, but failed for me: Are We There Yet.
I consciously realized that any movie that had a mostly black cast was not produced for my cultural/entertainment sensibilities.
Navel-gazing at its finest! These people make up “problems” for themselves. She is just as silly as any white person who spends a lot of time thinking about their “Whiteness.”
COPS?
The First 48?
The First 48?
Harlem Nights, with Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy was hilarious. The old shows, Good Times and The Jeffersons were pretty good too.
I don’t know the shows that the author watches, but virtue signaling and chips on the shoulder have always had zero appeal and always will.
Magnegro?!?
Marvel really did go all out when they started replacing the white guys!
Cops.
Here's a list of some all-black classics that I think most people would enjoy:
And of course there were some good black westerns back in the day starring Herb Jeffries a.k.a. the Bronze Buckaroo: Some of these movies are available on youtube.Wow, I don’t know where to start.
Her Blue Bloods account is particularly stupid as she assumes they are covering up a culture of racist violence in New York against blacks.
So, let’s take a look at the NYPD Firearms Discharge Report of 2015.
In a town of 8.5 million people with a 35,000 member department, there were 33 adversarial discharges in 2015.
For sake of argument (and it’s a stupid one) let’s assume that 100% of discharges were aimed at blacks. (or Blacks in her vernacular)
Since blacks comprise 24% of the population, the culture of violence in her eyes would affect .0016% of the population.
Taken across all demographics, the same 33 discharges actually affects .00038% of the population.
Our American culture crosses many racial, educational and cultural latitudes.
Beverly hillbillies and Green Acres was not an accurate portrayal of most Whites (see, I can do that too) but it was actually a biography of some.
To me, Good Times and What’s Happening seemed to both be shows that somewhat accurately portrayed the urban experience. Good families, struggling to make it in a challenging environment. Some of the humor was dumb, but the overall concept seemed good.
The author is actually quite shallow if she thinks she can shoehorn any culture into a TV show.
My stepson and I play a game watching cops. During each commercial break, we try to guess ethnicity and type of crime coming up.
And yes, parts of Baltimore are definitely like that.
The Jeffersons is likely out for her because:
1. George Jefferson was a tough businessman and not a bleeding heart liberal.
2. Helen Willis was happily married to one of the whitest men in television history.
The narrative is all messed up in terms of liberal “Blackness.”
I do not usually suggest movies, but if you have a slightly demented sense of humor and a hatred of PC, you should watch the movie Black Dynamite. It is a shameles parody of 70s blacksploitation movies and if you are a fan of off color absurd humor you may burst a kidney from laughing
