Windows 10 Creators Update Fail (vanity)
Self | Dec. 9, 2017 | (self) Pearls Before Swine

Looking for some helpful hints and discussion on Windows 10 update.

I have a G751 Asus ROG computer, which is pretty capable and modern (Intel quad core 4710HQ, 32 GB RAM, NVIDIA 970 GTX), only a couple of years old. I've been using Windows 10 Home Edition happily for the last 2+ years, accepting upgrades as they are pushed to me without problems.

Now comes the Creators Update (the 1703 series of Windows 10), and I have big problems.

First off, MS is pushing it on me, by clogging up my computer with the Windows 10 upgrade download. When I do the upgrade, which I have done is several ways, it is either wholly or partially unsuccessful. Details:

-Doing the upgrade as pushed, just doesn't work. It fails with the error 8007001x.

-Shutting off all startup services and oddball audio doesn't help.

- Using the media creation tool helps a little... the full Creators system downloads, checks itself, says its installing--and then crashes before the first reboot.

- Using this option with the "keep personal files and apps" option crashes at the point where the system should do its first stop and restart.

- Using the media creation tool with the "save personal data but not apps" actually does work... the system installs, and can be booted up. But, none of my drivers work. In particular the ethernet (wired) and ethernet wireless adapters don't work. The drivers are shown as present in Device Manager, but with the statement that they couldn't be loaded.

Fortunately, the rollback feature worked, and I'm back to the 1609 build. But the computer will be forever bothering me with pushing downloads of the upgrade assistant, I fear.

Has anyone else had similar experiences. This is very, very BETA. Previous upgrade experiences have been reasonably smooth.

I think your update is the same one that is bugging my system
November 30, 2017—KB4051963 (OS Build 16299.98)
That is the one that failed to install on my Windows 10 PC..it actually downloaded fully, rebooted, but then said that the update failed..I tried checking for updates hoping it would try to install again but says “No new updates”
What’s weird is that this update says its for AMD64..my PC is NOT AMD, its Intel so not sure why it even downloaded this update

Yeah, but after my experience today, I wonder if it will work on my machine.

I've been doing MS upgrades for many years, and this one worked the worst of any, except for the smooth rollback to the prior version.

Looks like drivers for your system haven't been updated in 2 years

Still, they're Windows 10, they should work .....

Don’t see why it wont. Spend $10.00 for the pro version.

OK, mine is also an INTEL, so I will just cancel this update.

I think I’ll ask granddaughter to first look into the “update” to see if she can deduce its particulars.

I’ve read about the “metered” trick. It works for wireless, but not for direct connection, which I prefer.

My install finished OK after a bunch of false starts, but that’s when I found I had a crippled computer—the drivers for both ethernet direct and wireless were there in device manager, but it said they couldn’t be loaded. That’s when I had to try roll-back, which worked quickly and well.

The install loop push is what I’ve had for the past several days, and is why I tried pretty hard to do the upgrade.

Correct you are. The one I was referencing was 1703, the last update. 1709 is a forced update that - yep, 16299.64 - it's the one I'm downloading now. Verrry Slooowly.

This is simply out of control. Microsoft needs to clean up its QA badly, really, really badly.

I think we are talking about 1703. But after the rollback, all I see are updates for the version I’m running, which is 1607. Also, the push shows up as repeated re-istallations of KB4049411 and KB 4033631. At least a half-dozen times.

My apologies - turns out my recent upgrade to 1703 is one version old and the latest one is 1709, which I’m downloading now, very slowly because my connection has used up all of its monthly LTE quota on the last upgrade. I could strangle somebody in Redmond right now.

You need to delete those repeated installs before doing another update install.

and all these days I STILL can’t download it..I keep on checking for new updates and it shows me none are available but when I go to update history it shows that one failed. Its the only one that has ever failed on me not sure why..and not sure why for an Intel PC(Mine is a Dell) it would download an AMD64 update its the wrong update

Ok, let me try to put some of what is going on in layman’s terms.

The large scale updates such as the Fall Creator’s Update... think of them as more like a traditional service pack. They are about that serious in terms of what happens when you install them. This means that many of the more proprietary driver oriented laptops, possibly like a high end ROG laptop, may have issues if you have for example done several of the major updates or worse done the in-place upgrade a couple years ago from Windows 8, to Windows 10 and have continued from there until now. Windows is likely just a mess at this point.

I would expect some software and driver issues after all that especially on a laptop like yours.

If you can stomach it, creating a new USB install stick from the Microsoft Media Creation Tool page will create a Windows 10 installer with the latest Fall Creator’s update already in it.

If it has been a few years since your last reinstall, this would be a good time to install from scratch directly to the current version of Windows 10, and see how it runs. My guess? The laptop will run great again, and you’ll probably just need to download a couple of proprietary drivers from ASUS for that specific laptop and the latest video card drivers and you’ll be running better than before.

The downside is you’ll have to reinstall all your software.

Yes, Microsoft is pushing the big updates (mini service packs) a little more frequently than before and yes sometimes you need to start over. It’s not really different than Windows has ever been, MS is just too aggressive with their update methodology. They want everyone current all the time. That’s admirable, but the complexity of Windows has always meant that sometimes big updates cause big issues.

My single largest gripe with the current Windows Update system is that it is not anywhere near verbose enough about what updates ARE done, what updatese NEED to be done, and what state the system is in NOW. Further, it does absolutely need a separate menu on the update page for the large updates. Users do need the ability to say “no” permanently to some of the big updates for many various reasons. Eventually, sure, everyone needs to get current but maybe you know your machine doesn’t like the next update or it will break some piece of business software. You need to just be able to halt it entirely and let them pop up warning boxes or something once a day that you need to find a solution to the problem for security sake soon.

Windows by it’s very nature is a virus.
My 3 laptops are running with Linux (Ubuntu).

No problems,no hangups,no freeze ups, no issues.

Run cleanmgr.exe and click the "Clean up system files" button. After the options appear, make sure that "Windows update cleanup" is one of the boxes checked.

Run that, then try the update again. The Creators Update takes a long time.

Will check that out, thanx.

I did do some of the more obscure power-shell recommendations for checking image integrity (DISM and SFC).

What is Windows Creator anyway. I don’t know if I have it and I haven’t knowingly used it either.

Let the ridicule begin!
