Thanks to cheap sex, marriage may be doomed.
The share of Americans ages 25-34 who are married dropped 13 percentage points from 2000 to 2014. A new book by sociologist Mark Regnerus blames this declining rate on how easy it is for men to get off.
Regnerus calls it “cheap sex,” an economic term meant to describe sex that has very little cost in terms of time or emotional investment, giving it little value.
Regnerus bases his ideas, in part, on the work of British social theorist Anthony Giddens, who argued that the pill isolated sex from marriage and children. Add online pornography and dating sites to the mix and you don’t even need relationships.
The result is “two overlapping (but distinctive) markets, one for sex and one for marriage, with a rather large territory in between comprised of significant relationships of varying commitment and duration,” Regnerus writes in “Cheap Sex: The Transformation of Men, Marriage, and Monogamy” (Oxford University Press).
In generations past, women generally made men wait until marriage to have sex. To get a wife (and, therefore, sex), men had to be clean and presentable and have a good job. This, Regnerus reasons, gave men all the motivation they needed to become respectable members of society.
Now with porn on-demand and greater reproductive freedom, sex is a commodity available at any time. This has left men with little motivation for marriage, writes Regnerus, who cites demographer Steven Ruggles’ prediction that one of every three people in their 20s will never marry.

It has nothing to do with men’s character alone. Men are choosing to not be legally yoked to a person who can and probably will ruin him financially and emotionally.
It’s really just free market capitalism. Maximize outputs for minimum inputs. Women devalued the vagina to almost nothing. Who pays top dollar for a commodity that is almost free?

Lot’s of truth in that statement. It’s no longer about equality, mutual deep respect, commitment, and willingness to sacrifice for each other. Now it’s about women vs men, women being better than men, women being powerful, etc. Anyone of either gender who can’t get past themselves enough to give adequate value to the life and dreams of a partner shouldn’t get married.
Oh, they’ve been bashing women here since at least 15 years ago.
Actually men tend to get affirmative action now in college admissions. So many more women than men are applying to college that schools are at risk of reaching the tipping point ratio (somewhere around 60/40) by which women lose interest in attending a particular college.
Certainly doesn’t seem to be worth all the effort I see these young people putting into it these days...
I lived on and off with a young woman whose bedside manner was like just another porn actress’s. Slutty-sounding gutter language and not very romantic at all. That was back in the early to mid-90’s and she’s 50 now. Even when she was 26 she was only a 6 or 7 out of 10...I’m glad I got out of that one when I did, but it should’ve been a lot sooner. I realized that there was no bringing her ‘up’ and I didn’t think it would be a good idea to dumb myself down for somebody like that.
I am sure she thinks we just can’t handle a “strong woman.”

I told my wife that based on the pool of young single women that I see everywhere when I am out, I’d hate to be 20 years old and in the market for a girlfriend or wife.
And if even some of what I read about college campuses now is accurate, the pool of non wacko females is seriously shrinking. Plus the dating environment there appears to be toxic.
In the early 70s I had a few dates with “feminists”. While fairly mild compared to today’s version, if there was no good sex involved, I moved on pretty quickly.
They had a lot of help from the media. Everything since the early 70's has been about romanticizing promiscuity.

Because it’s their way to escape their Biblical duty: To devote their lives to a man and raise children. Who wants to do that when they can get drunk until 4 am and get double teamed by a few guys ever weekend?

That’s even worse. Those are men who are weak and don’t know how to fight for the right things. If you are (a) Biblical (b) not a nice guy (c) not afraid to be a jerk to women and (d) understand their mind games, you will get more you know what than an toilet seat.
Women love men that are powerful, in charge, and to some extent put them in their place.
You may be right. But it seems to have gotten much worse in the last 2 years. I could be wrong, though.
I certainly didn’t say “alone”, so I agree with you there. But it serves no purpose for men to become followers if certain women have subverted their own character.
And no, I do not call free market capitalism the cause of moral degeneracy—that has to do with communism, as I noted in post #33.
YEs, I’d think all of those play a role more than “cheap sex”. A few decades ago the same media was trumpeting “cheap sex” as the greatest thing since sliced bread; now they see men able to recreate sexually as well and it is a problem...
