Thanks to cheap sex, marriage may be doomed.
The share of Americans ages 25-34 who are married dropped 13 percentage points from 2000 to 2014. A new book by sociologist Mark Regnerus blames this declining rate on how easy it is for men to get off.
Regnerus calls it “cheap sex,” an economic term meant to describe sex that has very little cost in terms of time or emotional investment, giving it little value.
Regnerus bases his ideas, in part, on the work of British social theorist Anthony Giddens, who argued that the pill isolated sex from marriage and children. Add online pornography and dating sites to the mix and you don’t even need relationships.
The result is “two overlapping (but distinctive) markets, one for sex and one for marriage, with a rather large territory in between comprised of significant relationships of varying commitment and duration,” Regnerus writes in “Cheap Sex: The Transformation of Men, Marriage, and Monogamy” (Oxford University Press).
In generations past, women generally made men wait until marriage to have sex. To get a wife (and, therefore, sex), men had to be clean and presentable and have a good job. This, Regnerus reasons, gave men all the motivation they needed to become respectable members of society.
Now with porn on-demand and greater reproductive freedom, sex is a commodity available at any time. This has left men with little motivation for marriage, writes Regnerus, who cites demographer Steven Ruggles’ prediction that one of every three people in their 20s will never marry.

Cheap sex will not doom marriage because sex is not the only reason men want to get married. Sure, most men have a promiscuous streak, and most would probably be promiscuous if they had nothing to lose, but in the end men want love, homes, a safe place to raise their children, and lots of other things that they can’t get from cheap sex.
Back when Joseph Campbell’s series was the rage, at a NYC dinner party I postulated that we were witnessing the beginnings of the Age of Maenads in the West.

It is not the “cheap sex”, it is the expensive divorce.
Why any man, with a few bucks in the bank and a decent career, would ever consider a marriage (a one sided contract enforced by the State) is beyond me. There is zero advantage for a man to marry, period. The family and domestic violence courts are stacked against the man and the word of the woman wins every time.
The problem here is Biblical. The Bible tells us in Genesis that woman will do everything in her power to attempt to usurp Biblical authority from the man. That is why throughout history, society did what was necessary to keep women in their place, because men knew that an untamed woman with all of the rights and duties of a man would result in social chaos.
In our current society, women are feral. They hold all of the cards and call all of the shots. They use the no-fault divorce to “test out marriage” and then when things don’t go their way they move in with the boyfriend and file for divorce. They get the kids and half of all property. It is a sad state of affairs. But what is even more depressing is the beta cucks I see being over-lorded by their GF/wives.
I mean, just think in a historical context...could you ever imagine a Roman solider or English constable coming to a man’s home to arrest him for straitening out his wife and maintaining discipline in his home? No way. And that’s the issue: Woman Biblically require discipline. Our ancestors knew this. Without it, they run wild as you see today.
Very good point. Man is a more basic animal. Point A to point B (good woman) is a straight line. If point B no longer exists, or is impossible to get to, then we change our goal.

When I was a young adult woman, we didn’t make the guys wait-I didn’t know even one virgin by my 1st year of college-I guess some would say we were all a bunch of sluts-but most of us were not promiscuous, and we got engaged to a steady guy, married before or after graduation, had kids, house in the burbs, etc.
In the remote ranching area near the border where I grew up, when boys started to really notice the girls at maybe 14-15, dads took them to one of the fancier brothels across the river and had the boy pick a prostitute a few years older to show him what it was all about-common practice that we all knew about-no one thought much about it, and it was supposed to keep us respectable ranch girls virgin a bit longer. I don’t think it worked all that well, though-hormones are hormones...

And the odds are not in their favor.
