Thanks to cheap sex, marriage may be doomed.
The share of Americans ages 25-34 who are married dropped 13 percentage points from 2000 to 2014. A new book by sociologist Mark Regnerus blames this declining rate on how easy it is for men to get off.
Regnerus calls it “cheap sex,” an economic term meant to describe sex that has very little cost in terms of time or emotional investment, giving it little value.
Regnerus bases his ideas, in part, on the work of British social theorist Anthony Giddens, who argued that the pill isolated sex from marriage and children. Add online pornography and dating sites to the mix and you don’t even need relationships.
The result is “two overlapping (but distinctive) markets, one for sex and one for marriage, with a rather large territory in between comprised of significant relationships of varying commitment and duration,” Regnerus writes in “Cheap Sex: The Transformation of Men, Marriage, and Monogamy” (Oxford University Press).
In generations past, women generally made men wait until marriage to have sex. To get a wife (and, therefore, sex), men had to be clean and presentable and have a good job. This, Regnerus reasons, gave men all the motivation they needed to become respectable members of society.
Now with porn on-demand and greater reproductive freedom, sex is a commodity available at any time. This has left men with little motivation for marriage, writes Regnerus, who cites demographer Steven Ruggles’ prediction that one of every three people in their 20s will never marry.

I have gotten a little side tracked but I think that all these computer and electronic distractions combined with a poor diet and almost complete lack of physical activity has made our young people fatter, and less attractive to one another. ============================================================
My 2 cents is that access to unlimited information and smartphones has had the following effects:
1. Allowed people to create their own information bubbles
2. Distort reality
3. Degrade civility
4. Reduce common sense
5. Reduce physical activity, which in turn reduces attractiveness
I tell some people this and they just label me an old curmudgeon. However, I don’t think it is age. If anything, my experience better allows me to compare now & then.
I think the smartphones especially give people a sense of power and invulnerability. They imagine they can influence the world by using hashtags or liking something. It distorts reality and is a dangerous delusion.
I use my computer a lot but do not own a smartphone on purpose (just a plain flip phone).
A pretty well funded wife can accelerate your career. There is a status in obtaining that “trophy” wife.

Ex has seen our children about 3 days in the last year. Two older children refer to her as an incubator and just “say the right things” to her when they converse. Sad situation all around, but the “ex” found herself I guess (While hurting 5 people that once loved her).
‘Eat, Pray, Love’ or whatever set her off after reading the book. Before that looking for “father figures” to sleep with. Lost soul if you ask me, her denial about what she did to the kids mentally, emotionally, etc... angers me the most.

Actually it’s a lot harder for a guy to fake being masculine than for a woman to fake being that ‘perfect match’, so no. But there are clues that help. For example, if the guy is from West Coast, God help your girls. If the guy is from Texas (particularly if from a real Texan family), then it’s a real man.
So sexually and mentally depraved people are helping each other in floods and disasters? How nice!
