NEW YORK ― Bahar Akyurtlu had been teaching for about four months at a high school in Harlem before several students began bullying her. When she walked down the halls, clusters of students would shout at her, referring to her as mister. In stairwells, students would yell that her voice sounded like a man.
The harassment didnt surprise her, even if it stung, cutting to the core of her identity. Sadly, she sees it as one of the occupational hazards of being a transgender teacher, she said.
In February, the Trump administration rolled back protections for transgender students. It rescinded guidance that called on school districts to allow students to use the bathroom that corresponds with their gender.
LGBTQ students were not the only people in schools that this action impacted. Transgender educators ― even if the move did not necessarily impact the bathroom they use ― had to watch as the rights of LGBTQ students were severed, while facing their own, unique workplace challenges.
The exact number of transgender people who work as educators are unknown, and overall, exact data on the issue is hard to come by. But the ones who do work in education often have to navigate a sticky web of parents, students and colleagues who have varying levels of acceptance, amid a backdrop of minimal workplace protections, The Huffington Post found after interviewing seven transgender educators in March....

I am sure I don’t care what it’s like.
If some stupid person identifies as Barack H. Obama in their own mind, are they free to go all romantic on Moosechelle?
He’s an Exhibitionist.
He loves the attention.
Grab a hankie? More like grab a bucket.
What a nightmare for them, and for us, that these people cannot be diagnosed and treated. The root of the problem is spiritual, which extends into the physical, emotional, and psychological realm.
Our (previous) tolerance and (present) celebration of all these social pathologies is a disgrace.
Wow. Cute gal.
He/She/It could smoke a cig in a downpour.
Transgender and hankie in the same title. ...yuck
Grab an axe and put it out of it’s misery.
I couldn't care less.
If I never hear of another transgendered freak ever again, it will be too soon.
That's just the way it is.
Moving right along...
Bahar Akyurtlu, a math teacher at Harlem Renaissance HS in Manhattan, says being a good teacher and respecting students helps enormously. I try to do well by my trans community, by my trans students, Akyurtlu says. But more than anything else I like good conversations about gender.
Spivak?
If only that were the weirdest part of it. Look up “two spirit” and “genderqueer.”
As a teacher, HE just stood and watched as LGBT students got into shouting matches in order to protect HIM. Hmmmm. No discipline. No authority. The hairy knuckled wimp just stood there and let kids protect HIM. What if the students had gotten physical and seriously hurt? Maybe that’s what the sicko wanted.
What textbook curriculum has a unit on BLM?
How has a somewhat healthy society deteriorate to this...?
So this is Trump’s fault? I bet that this would happen even if Hillary (ugh!) had been elected.
I teach English as a Second Language. As one who loves and respects my mother tongue, I will not be adopting foolishness such as the made-up pronouns. Plus, my students already find English enough of a challenge without this crap.
Talk about whatever you like, but when we reach for home plate, we don't want a bat in the way.
