Democratic lawmakers are calling for President Obama to close Guantanamo Bay because "Donald Trump must be deprived of the use” of the controversial prison.
Representatives including New York City’s Hakeem Jeffries, Jerrold Nadler, Nydia Velazquez and Jose Serrano signed a letter sent to the White House Wednesday.
Obama promised during his first presidential campaign to close the facility on Cuban soil, which was filled with suspected terrorists during the Bush administration, some of whom have stayed there for years without a trial or charges.
The White House has said that it is working to move the 18 inmates who remain at the facility that have been approved to be transferred to other countries such as Yemen....

Guantanamo's lease belongs to the Citizens of the U.S. through their elected representatives in the Bicameral Congress.
Without Congress' participation, no delusional demagogue or look-at-me elected criminal without a clue nobody has ever noticed can change the legal status of the place.

Any news story that mentions "Guantanamo" assumes that we all understand what that refers to.
There IS a place called "US Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay.
Unfortunately there are at least three other distinct places with the name "Guantanamo".

I’ve been to Diego Garcia before, back in the 1980’s when I was in the Navy. Diego is in the ‘middle of nowhere’ and from my understanding, it’s near India.
I recall the mosquitos being ravenous and traveling in dark clouds at night. The waters were sort of flat and lanquid, not much wave action at that time. The sun was bright and strong.
