Immigration Bill Contains Slush Funds for Pro-Amnesty Groups

The pro-amnesty lobbyists who helped craft the Schumer-Rubio immigration bill included within the bill two "slush funds" amounting to $150 million that may be supplemented with additional taxpayer dollars for years to come. Slush fund grantees are "public or private, non-profit organizations" described in the bill as including "a community, faith-based, or other immigrant-serving organization whose staff has demonstrated qualifications, experience, and expertise in providing quality services to immigrants, refugees, persons granted asylum, or persons applying for such statuses." In other words, the grantees would include many of the groups involved in writing and promoting the amnesty. [IRS]

Section 2537 of the Schumer-Rubio bill provides "Initial Entry, Adjustment, and Citizenship Assistance" grants to public and private, non-profit organizations that promise to help illegal immigrants apply for the amnesty (p. 384). For example, this includes help with "completing applications", "gathering proof of identification", and "applying for any waivers". But the recipients of these funds are given a lot of discretion, as the funds can also be used for "any other assistance" that the grantee "considers useful" to aliens applying for amnesty. The bill appropriates $100 million in grant funding for a five-year period ending in 2018, plus any additional "sums as may be necessary for fiscal year 2019 and subsequent fiscal years". (p. 392). There are no limits to the amount of money that may be given out to pro-amnesty groups.

Section 2106 of the Schumer-Rubio bill creates the "Grant Program to Assist Eligible Applicants" and the funds also go to public and private non-profit organizations (p. 131). The grants are to be used for promoting the amnesty through public information campaigns and helping illegal immigrants with the application process.

Consider what the Gang of Eight is attempting to hide by moving so quickly. The bill:

Grants amnesty to illegal aliens simply after the Secretary of Homeland Security submits plans to secure the border;

Grants amnesty to criminals and gang members;

Does not require amnestied illegal aliens to pay back-taxes;

Does not require amnestied illegal aliens to learn English;

Allows illegal aliens to sue the government for amnesty;

Allows the open borders and pro-amnesty lobbies to sue to prevent enforcement measures from taking place before illegal aliens can receive green cards;

Requires taxpayers foot the bill for illegal aliens to fight deportations at the Attorney General’s sole and unreviewable discretion;

Requires only 3 of 9 southern border sectors to have a 90% apprehension rate, leaving the rest in the porous status quo;

Grants green cards and citizenship after 5 years to illegal aliens claiming to have come to the U.S. before the age of 16 who meet certain criteria;

and

Effectively halts all deportations for years by requiring Homeland Security to allow every illegal alien its agents intercept to apply for amnesty and prohibiting agents from deporting them until the illegal alien’s application is adjudicated.

Marco Rubio to speak at St. Lucie Republican Party’s Lincoln Day Dinner tonight

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, a potential presidential candidate in 2016, will be the keynote speaker at the St. Lucie County Republican Party’s annual Lincoln Day Dinner at the Polish American Club in Port St. Lucie Wednesday night.

Nearly all of the 300 tickets available for the black tie optional dinner, which is the party’s biggest annual fundraiser, were sold by Tuesday, said party Chairman Bill Paterson. Tickets cost $125 each for dinner only and $225 each for a VIP package that includes meeting Rubio before dinner.

Rubio slight favorite among Republicans for 2016; Bush close behind April 30, 2013

Hillary Clinton is the clear favorite among Democrats in the 2016 presidential race while Florida Sen. Marco Rubio leads — slightly — the Republican field, according to a new Fairleigh Dickinson University’s PublicMind poll.

The national poll of registered voters found that 63 percent of self-identified Democrats and those who lean Democratic support Clinton. Joe Biden came second with 12 percent, followed by Andrew Cuomo with 3 percent.

“As for the current crop of frequently mentioned Republican possibilities, Republicans split their loyalties about evenly among Florida Senator Mario Rubio (18%), former Florida Governor Jeb Bush (16%), and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie (14%). Another nine percent endorse former US Senator Rick Santorum, and a fifth each prefer someone else (21%) or are unsure (21%)”

The most poll was conducted by telephone from April 22 through April 28, 2013 using a randomly selected sample of 863 registered voters nationwide. It has a MOE of +/- 3.4 percentage points.
