150 years later, Virginia treats Lincoln like a hero (Hooray for Hollywood)
SF Gate ^ | April 11, 2013 | Christine Delsol

As the capital of the Confederate States of America, Richmond, Va. could hardly be described as a supporter of Abraham Lincoln; its grand Monument Avenue is chock-full of oversized statues of heroes of the Confederacy, including Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis and Jeb Stuart. But now, nearly 150 years after the Civil War ended, Lincoln – or at least the movie version of him – is Richmond’s new hero...

To coincide with the movie’s recent release on DVD, Virginia Tourism Corporation has created several self-guided tours that follow Lincoln around the state...

While I'm all for more appreciation of Lincoln, who I consider just behind George Washington among our national political heroes, it's sad when historical awareness in our nation is so driven by Hollywood.

Just wait until the movie about Sherman comes out. There will be a tourist trap in Atlanta with a statue of the general holding a match.

Lincoln was a capable wartime leader. He rightly discerned the evil inn slavery. BUT he let his zeal overtake his responsibility to the Constitution. He “saved the union” at the expense of the Republic.

Civil rights for blacks became a reality in 1964.

When would civil rights for blacks have become a reality had Lincoln not launched war against the secessionist southern states?

When would the union have been restored, if at all, had Lincoln chosen to allow the secessionist states to go their own way?

I think it helps to put Lincoln’s wartime measures in context by looking at what was going on with the other side. Habeas corpus was non existent in the Confederacy for Southern dissenters.

He clamped down the same on dissent in the North. He crushed anti-draft protesters. Without putting too a fine point on things, except for slavery (a huge “except”) the South was right. It’s a terrible tragedy. I was born and bred in Wisconsin of a family of Irish immigrants, that includes a number of men who fought for the North.

"Other than that, Mrs Lincoln, how was the play?"

Lincoln’s approval of Gen Grant and Sherman’s “scorched earth” treatment of the South makes him culpable for more murder and destruction within the US than any other President in our history.

Hehe. Yeah, that's for sure. All the other issues really paled by comparison. Freely admitted. I'm just saying that it's such a tragedy that we lost so much freedom as a result of fighting for freedom.

It's like the abortion on demand issue now. You can't have a normal political discussion with your fellow citizens if they refuse to even look at the abattoir run by Dr. Kermit Gosnell. We can't condemn slavery in the South 150 years ago and ignore what amounts to mini death camp for black babies in PA.

This is a very sick country.

Lincoln ‘’launched’’ a war against the secessionist states? I thought the South had been agitating for a war and launched it when they opened fire on Fort Sumter.

I often wonder if the South had won the war what would America be like today?

That's like saying except for that murder thing Ted Bundy was a real nice guy.

I heard some old fogies talking at a picnic here in VA.

“Yeah, look who started it.”

*Embarrassed Silence while they thought of Ft. Sumter*

“Yeah, but that was a conspiracy.”

Any Freeper should be proud to be proud of Lincoln. As Dr. Guelzo puts it so eloquently:

“Lincoln is, both culturally and in terms of his economic thinking, firmly and immovably located in the center of what we can call liberal democratic thought in the 19th century. He is very much market oriented, with tremendous confidence in the power of a capitalist society to transform for the better, and he believes in opening the possibilities of that society to as many as possible. To him, that’s what’s coterminous with liberty. If you have to put him in company, he would belong with John Stuart Mill, whom he seriously admired. Shortly before he was assassinated, Lincoln was asked by a journalist what books had been most influential for him. One of the two books he indicated is Stuart Mill’s On Liberty. Put him in that context of the upwardly aspiring bourgeoisie—that’s Lincoln.”

You can’t have free men rise who have to compete with agrarian, aristocratic slaveholders. (Not to mention firstly the incredible injustice to the slaves).

Nasty. Slavery would have continued out west for a long time, ensuring murder and mayhem. Civil rights problems and riots would have continued for much longer.

Also, can you imagine having to use a passport to enter each state? I'm thankful to be able to travel freely from state to state.

We still have a 10th amendment, and I still believe in it. Constitutional rights usurp states rights.

Two rather ignorant statements. Seriously, read a book.
