If you think comparing Mitt Romneys supporters in the American South to the Civil Wars Confederacy would be irresponsible and racially suggestive, Daily Beast Daily Dish blogger Andrew Sullivan apparently disagrees with you.
If Virginia and Florida go back to the Republicans, its the Confederacy, entirely, Sullivan declared on this weekends This Week with George Stephanopoulos.
You put a map of the Civil War over this electoral map, youve got the Civil War, he added.
That comment drew the ire of Washington Post columnist George Will, who said the presidents policies not racism are influencing voters in states like Virginia and Florida.
Democrats have been losing the white vote constantly since 1964, so thats not new, Will said. Heres what were trying to talk about 2008, Obama gets that many white votes. This time the polls indicate he may get this many. Were trying to explain this difference. Now, two possible explanations a lot of white people that voted for Obama in 2008 watched him govern for four years and said, Not so good, lets try someone else. The alternative the Confederacy hypothesis is those people for some reason somehow the last four years became racists.
Sullivan countered that he wasnt necessarily alleging racism.
Im just pointing out the fact that the white people that have changed their minds happened to be in Virginia and Florida, Sullivan responded. And if you actually look at the map, they were the only two the Southernization of Republican Party, they were the only two states in 2008 that violated the Confederacy rule.
You made an empirical statement that is checkable and false, which is the white people moving, moving away are in those two states, Will countered.
That’s funny, the confederates were Democrats.
If I could make one suggest to the “This Week” production crew....please remove the Daily Beast commentators. They have become a cheerleader squad and frankly, you’d get better opinions from a barbershop crew in Iuka, Mississippi than these dimwits.
Isn’t Andrew Sullivan concerned about the Venezuelan system making inroads in this country if Obama gets a second term?
Homosexuals sure do think weird. Strange people.
Look at this for what it is. A scare appeal to black voters.
If I were running for POTUS, one of my campaign promises would be to send all British-born queers back to their misty isle forthwith.
This twerp certainly becomes tedious in his hysteria-per-day. He’s more excitable than any little girl I’ve met and he makes about as much sense as a sliding screen door in a submarine.
Besides the appalling and deliberate slander, little Andy was wrong when he said “they were the only two states in 2008 that violated the Confederacy rule.”
NC also went to obama, which makes 3.
some white men that are dumping the obamanation makes it “racism”, and 90% of blacks supporting him is not.
the ‘rats are THE KKK RACIST PARTY. a conservative “black” like Clarence Thomas, or West, or Condi Rice become “uncle tom’s” because they are not on the rat plantation.
now the immigration issue is not about anything but adding to the voting public more people on the public dole to vote for rats to keep them in power.
either, we will become a third world country, or a revolution will take place to restore the Constitution.
no communists, fascists, socialists or islamists need apply.
blessings, bobo
Lol...I just built some slave quarters on the patio. Can’t wait for the cotton to ripen in the window box!
Sonds like Will made him look like the ass that he is.
Any why does anyone care in the least what this worthless scumbag says?
Millions of white voters who voted for Obama in 2008 are not going to vote for Obama in 2012.
I am confused.
Did all of those voters become racists over the past four years or did it just take them four years to notice that Obama is black?
Nice slap down from George Will. Andrew Sullivan just wanted to be able to insinuate racism without having to own it. He belongs on a Hardball quality type show. He’s an emotional cheerleading hack.
