Abe Lincoln was a dictator??? (Need Help combating loony argument)

Posted on 04/19/2010 8:18:35 AM PDT by erod

Hi FRiends,

I have two brothers who I love very much, they’re young and libertarian Ron Paul supporters, sigh. We get along and I’m hoping that one day they’ll come back to conservatism, but they have bought into a theory that I don’t think makes much sense:

Abe Lincoln was a dictator.

There are many websites dedicated to this nonsense you can Google "Abe Lincoln dictator" and get some weird stuff, if you want to check it out.

I need your help in busting this myth are there any books I can read on this subject to dispel this stuff? Do you know any of the arguments to combat this nonsense? Ie. Lincoln did not want to free the slaves.

Thanks for taking time out of your day to help me out, -Erod

I defend nothing, I merely point out the conditions that created slavery.

When was slavery ever a compassionate institution?

When the alternative was death. Read some history, you know Greeks, Romans, Visigoths, Celts, Vikings, Persians, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Aztec, Mayan, any tribe in Africa (then and now), Arabs, Souix, Apache, Iroquois, Tartars, Huns, Mongols,... do I need to go on?

Really? Maybe it was his wingman that is a trucker from Louisiana or East Texas. But, you have been here longer and would know.

Post on.

Ah yes, a choice between death and eternal bondage and forced labor for life. Yes, I can see the compassion just dripping from the second half of that choice. </sarcasm>

Ok, you do know that he suspended the writ of habeas corpus, right, and you do understand what that means? Yes, Abe stretched the limits of executive power and facts are facts, even if they come from Ron Paul supporters.

...and facts are facts, even if they come from Ron Paul supporters.

But facts are not fact just because they come from Ron Paul supporters. Somewhere around here is a thread started when Paul made the idiotic comment that Lincoln could have prevented the Civil War merely by buying up all the slaves.

Don’t think so. It probably makes me an Orangeman, much like Andy Jackson.

Well, Rev. Ian Paisley is a big fan of the Puritans.

Boy, you really had to do some serious cherry picking to isolate that quote while avoiding Lincoln's criticisms of the Dred Scott decision.

----------------------------------------------

It fit his profile!

“Now irrespective of the moral aspect of this question as to whether there is a right or wrong in enslaving a negro, I am still in favor of our new Territories being in such a condition that white men may find a home—may find some spot where they can better their condition—where they can settle upon new soil and better their condition in life. I am in favor of this not merely (I must say it here as I have elsewhere) for our own people who are born amongst us, but as an outlet for free white people everywhere, the world over."

Signed

Tyrant and chief

Dishonest Abe Lincoln

Grown men shooting at school buses and violence in 1972? Well, I would like to research that.

No, it's possible to read the Constitution, esp. Article I, Section 9, and notice that the relevant language, while it is in the passive voice (as are several other clauses in Section 9 which obviously and manifestly pertain to the exercise of power by Congress), is located in that Article of the Constitution which outlines the powers of the Congress, not the President.

But we've been over all that before. Tried to catch me napping, didn't you?

Is it humblegunner that is from L.A. or E. Texas? I think he had some hilarious videos.

Then choose death. To recognize the truth does not create a sarcastic moment. It is what it is. Obviously, many people have chosen life over death and accepted a slaves life. If this did not occur then there would have been no institution of slavery. The logic is cold and hard. Deal with it.

To: Logical me

Maybe this country should never have been one nation. Ever thnk of that? Maybe we should never have rebelled against England and then slavery would have ended peacefully and the civil war would never have happened.

Long Live Your Lawful Ruler and King George III!

Research away. Also take a look at Newark in 1967. After that one, LBJ forbid using National Guardsmen in race riots. 1967 was real high water mark for North Eastern love and understanding. I remember it well.
