The Sci & Horror B-movies of Yesteryear
Osnome | 6-7-09 | poster

I like the b-movies of the 1950's and 1960's the best.

Little or no foul language, not too much violence, and the wacky cheesy monsters they created. Today it is all femminazi superbimbos in charge, tons of CGI effects, and they are all produced in Canada :-Z

Last night I watched a sci-fi flick from 1962 called: Journey To The Seventh Planet, that had some really hokey monsters- one of which was a one-eyed dinosaur creature with rat-like features and big three fingered claws. This film was created by the same team that made ANGREY RED PLANET of 1959. Ib Melchior wrote that flick and this one and many others. Ever see 'Planet Of The Vampires' 1965 by Mario Bava? That film was inspiration for ALIEN.

Does anyone remember a movie that had a bunch of men on some space ship or space station and they were being attacked by this bee-like or waspy woman who would slowly walk towards the unsuspecting victim in some sort of trancy dance movement. The men would look away for a second and rub their eyes and when they would look she would be gone, but then show up again when they looked yet again in her direction? I cant remember the name because I saw it when I was around 5-6 yo and now I’m an old man.

Also has anyone seen “VOYAGE TO THE PLANET OF PREHISTORIC WOMEN?”

That’s one of the best “so bad it’s good” movies ever! A giant turkey buzzard from another galaxy, surrounded by an anti-matter shield. I love it when Mara Corday finally figures out why the creature may have come to earth. “It came here to build a nest!”

Has anyone in this thread mentioned another Mara Corday film, The Black Scorpion? A giant scorpion attacks Mexico City after a volcano eruption frees it from its underground lair. The military ends up fighting it in the Mexico City soccer stadium.

And from Japan, the very creepy Attack of the Mushroom People. A bunch of people on a yacht end up blown off course, and onto a deserted island, by a storm. There, they find giant mushrooms which turn anyone who eats them into a living, walking mushroom. I think American TV producer Sherwood Schwartz must have seen this film prior to creating Gilligan’s Island. The people on the yacht include the skipper, his first mate, a rich dude, an egotistical actress, a sweet “girl next door” type, a professor....sound familiar?

Was the chick a vampire who chewed on the arm? Did she lay pulsing red “eggs” all over the ship? She had a bubble head helmet? The actress had no dialog?

If that’s your movie, I don’t remember the title but I know the creepy character

There was a great one where a mystery creature has broken out of the north polar ice cap and is circling the earth, leaving destruction in it’s wake. Seventy minutes of really good suspense and tension

Was that the one where the attacks appeared to be occurring at random, until someone realized they were all on a spiral path from the north pole?

BTW, how about, “The Day of the Triffids?”

I knew someone of impeccable taste would remember that one...

I think the creepy part is when she sits up in the ambulance when she hears the ant sounds and the cop and attendant don’t see her. Then it stops and she lies down before they turn back.

Loved that part.

A few years back I was in a warehouse store and one of the ceiling vent fans was making that sound. I looked up and said "THEM!", and the random stranger next to me replied with "James Arness, James Whitmore, 1954."

I live for moments like that...

As a matter of fact I do remember eggs and she did have a bubble head helmet. I also don’t recall her talking. You are on the right track.

>>“Island of Terror”, l966

Peter Cushing, and a lst class cast.

This movie scared me to death as a kid, would love to see it again, but no DVD is out.

Anyone else remember this movie?
<<

May have been released as ISLAND OF THE BURNING DOOMED, with Christopher Lee as a Radio Astronomer.

Alien blobs of heat ride a radio beam down to an earth station on a British Island.

“Giant Claw” is on the “Icons of Horror Collection - Sam Katzman” set. Sony 22074.

If you hit Amazon and search on “The Giant Claw” it’ll come up.

>>Sorry, I stand corrected. I don’t know why I thought it was made in the 30s, Maybe because I’ve only seen the movie in b&w.<<

As far as I know, that film MAN FROM PLANET X is all B&W.
No color versions.

Maybe one factor that got you thinking 1930’s is this alien did not arrive in a flying saucer but a diving bell spaceship. The alien's spacesuit is also like an old diving suit.
They give a pseudo-scientific explanation for this in the movie.
