Southerners looking to share their Confederate holiday
Hartford Courant ^ | March 22, 2009 | Dahleen Glanton

ATLANTA — In a cultural war that has pitted Old South against new, defenders of the Confederate legacy have opened a fresh front in their campaign to polish an image tarnished, they said, by people who do not respect Southern values.

With the 150th anniversary of the War Between the States in 2011, efforts are under way in statehouses, small towns and counties across the South to push for proclamations or legislation promoting Confederate history.

Do you think in 1862 after the emancipation proclamation was signed by the Illinois butcher, and Jeff Davis said great idea Abe we will free all our slaves too (which would have been a great strategic move). Do you really think the war would have ended that day? I don’t. Not for a minute.

post 34 - You are correct. Even Thomas Jefferson predicted a war between the states would occur over the issue of slavery. Though accurate that the North’s unfair trade policies towards the South played a part in the acrimony between the two, the prevalent cause of the Civil War was exactly as you’ve stated.

post 32 - Despicable remark. I’ll be gracious and not ask you if sexual abuse does not occur in the South or amongst Baptists.

No, I don't find you factually correct. Nor do I intend to imply Lincoln didn't share the white supremacy opinion of just about all white Americans of his era.
I also don't intend to transpose 21st Century sensibilities on a 19th Century society.

However, I also dispute Lincoln did not wish to end slavery. He did, however, understand the dangers the nation faced over the issue and would have saved the union first. Who knows how he would have dealt with the issues post war? We will never know because he was murdered by a scumbag.

So, it is all you bring to the table.

Cheap shots and school yard name calling.

I honestly do believe that there was a fair measure of states’ rights involved with the Civil War, along with a significant role played by the economy between the states of the time (consider the massive blockade shortly following the battle of Fort Sumter).

However, you’d have to be somewhat ignorant of history to deny that slaves had a role. Slavery was an integral part of the Southern economy at the time. Though the notion of one man owning hundreds upon hundreds of slaves is somewhat exaggerated - very few Southerners owned more than a few slaves, and IIRC, there existed less than ten that owned more than a few hundred - you can’t ignore this facet. Looking at the writings and letters of Southern politicians would reveal a genuine notion of superiority over blacks, which was only enforced by the Dred Scott Decision shortly before the war began.

Personally, given the industrialization going on throughout Western Civilization - plus the efforts of the British in shutting down the African Slave trade many years prior - I believe that the necessity of slavery as an economic institution would have passed away as machinery took a larger role. Who knows, without the bad blood instigated by the Civil War and the ensuing Reconstruction - which in and of itself blew up over the bad blood between the various Compromises of years past that attempted to mitigate the free/slave state issue - perhaps the issue of rights for colored people would’ve been a lot smoother.

Alas, what happened happened.

I certainly would prescribe some measure of nobility to various peoples of the Confederacy. As for nobility of the CSA itself? Not so much...maybe just a little.

To paraphrase Horatio: “I am more antique Confederate than an Obamanite.”

For one, they didn't sodomize their alter boys.

Name me one Christian denomination that Satan does not try and corrupt the head of.

The failings of men are not the failings of the message.

“Illinois butcher”?

Abe was in the meat business?

Jeff stated the foundation of the Confederacy was over slavery. Why would he free them?

The war ended when the insurrection ended. The South quit. Had they quit earlier, the war would have ended earlier.

Lincoln has been lambasted because of his statements that had leaving slavery kept the Union intact, he would have done so. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

Do you think if the south had freed their slaves in September of 1862 IAW with the emancipation proclamation, the war would have ended right there and then. Please justify your answers, if possible.

Just got there.
This isn’t the only thing I am doing today.
If there is a delay, I’ll get back. Some like yardstick, aren’t worth any more effort but I’ll keep going with the grownups.

I think in the first volume of Bill Bennett’s tome on American history, he makes the point that the slavery question being compromised as a way to create a nation actually ensured that there would be a Civil War/War Between the States/ War of Northern Aggression (did I leave any out???)

Pennsylvania has a confederate memorial day? What the hell?

I was a tad shocked, also. Must have something to do with that little Gettysburg dustup..................

I'm actually looking for parts of Southeastern Virginia to move to from Kansas.

Good. Virginia is mostly a lost cause to the yankees, anyway. We certainly don't need any more of you liberals coming to South Carolina.

Right, because your pot-stirring opening commment was so grown up.

But that's fine. I've made my point. Have a nice day.

Please read this: Jefferson Davis and the Big S

The problem with the USA is that states rights are dead. The civil war killed the 10th amendment. This can't be discussed however without first wading through 18 miles of "it was about slavery you bigoted hick" before you actually get to the main event. Very frustrating....
