The Candidate (Rudy Giuliani in NH)
The American Spectator ^ | 1/29/2007 | Philip Klein

Posted on 01/29/2007 1:36:27 PM PST by Dark Skies

Many skeptics continue to question whether Rudy Giuliani is serious about making a run for the White House, but it was abundantly clear on Saturday that he had come to Manchester for more than the sub-freezing temperatures.

Addressing over 500 activists at the New Hampshire Republican Party's annual meeting as part of a two-day swing through the state, Giuliani sketched the broad outlines of what looks like a presidential run. Sounding at times like a motivational speaker, Giuliani cautioned against cynicism and pessimism in the wake of November's election results and challenges in the ongoing War on Terror. The message especially resonated with the audience in this critical primary state, where the Republican Party just lost control of both chambers of the legislature for the first time since the 1870s.

"The best way we remain safe and we retain our freedom...is remaining on offense, remaining strong and not becoming weak in a time of pressure," Giuliani said in a line that drew the biggest applause from the crowd at the Palace Theater.

No one said that Rudy was part of the administration when he got the award. Clearly Reagan admired and trusted him or he wouldn't have had him in his administration. So when you mention that Gorby got the award too but wasn't presidential material, it's a little ridiculous on your part, but maybe you specialize in that.

YOU made the claim that rudy got the award as a further qualification of eligibility as president, which is what this whole thread is about. Why else would you have posted it. Bob hope got the same award, too, btw.

There is a clairification out that Rudy said legal immigrants to be citizens not illegals. I don't have time to find it but when I do, I will give you the source.

MORE FROM RUDY ON IMMIGRATION:

The first question from the crowd was regarding (no surprise) Illegal Immigration. Rudy essentially gave three steps that need to be enacted in any immigration reform legislation. The first step is to seal the borders. Secondly, there needs to be a mechanism for those who are here illegally to come forward so that we can identify who they are and screen them for criminals and potential terrorists. Thirdly, any immigration reform measure would have to included an English language requirement to foster assimilation into American Culture.

Thanks for the post. It's funny I thought we would barely win in 06 ....Rudy would be the nominee in 08...and whip Hillary by 40 states. That would break apart the dim party for good...a DNC middle vs Move on.org angry left.

We seem to be beating then at the punch.

At what point does pragmatism in the pursuit of victory result in the destruction of core conservative values? If the end result of pragmatism is the triumph of liberalism over conservatism what have you achieved.

Your tag line quotes WFB to bolster your premise. That's the same WFB who championed Joe Lieberman against Lowell Weicker. As far as I'm concerned, Rudy Guiliani is a modern day Lowell Weicker.

RudyG: And then you have to have a way in which people can regularize themselves as well.

I know you're not gonna like this, or believe it either, but the word "regularize" is a code word for amnesty. Rudy supports the Senate's general proposal for comprehensive immigration reform. Amnesty and a path to citzenship for 15 million illegals. Senate bill S.2611 is the basis for every one of the Senate's liberal immigration reform proposals. Rudy Giuliani stands with Pres Bush, and they both stand with McCain, Kennedy, Hagel, Martinez and the rest of the open borders crowd in the US Senate. Bush is opposed to House bill HR4437 passed back in Dec2005! Its the enforcement ONLY bill. Bush and Rudy both stand with the Democrats on this issue. Plain and simple.

Gosh, you'll have to show me where I said THAT. Of course you can't, but you sure don't mind lying about it, which says more about you than it does about me.

Well if we don't get a Republican controlled congress then nothing will be done on immigration. Oh wait.... didn't that just happen???

There are quite a few posters that stated on threads over the past few days that they will not vote for Rudy if he is the republican nominee under any circumstances, so how can they still be republicans and be immune from criticism for that attitude?

You see here is the clincher! They are not Republicans they are Conservatives! At least that is what they say.

Not true. Maybe before the year is out, definitely before Bush leaves office, he will sign comprehensive immigration legislation into law. Amnesty and a path to citizenship will become the new law of the land. Unless the outcry from the American people is loud enough to reach the White House, like it was on Harriet Miers fiasco and the Dubai Ports World deal breaker. OTOH. Nominating Rudy Giuliani as the Republican Party standard bearer won't win back the Congress for the GOP. Rudy at the top of the ticket will assure that conservatives will either stay home on election day 2008, or vote third party. I keep telling you, conservatives don't vote for liberals.

I like your tag-line. I first heard that statement (or similar) attributed to Whittaker Chambers. It was in response to Buckley's carping about the shortcomings of the Republican candidate.

Well said, its like circular nit-picking, a vacuous exercise signifying nothing. The same arguments have been made by the same people over the past five days, the only thing that has changed is someone is going to be banned or the Rudy posts will be disallowed.

And here is more: Giuliani did say that "a tremendous amount of money should be put into the physical security" needed to stop the flow of illegal immigrants coming across the border.
