The Candidate (Rudy Giuliani in NH)
The American Spectator ^ | 1/29/2007 | Philip Klein

Posted on 01/29/2007 1:36:27 PM PST by Dark Skies

Many skeptics continue to question whether Rudy Giuliani is serious about making a run for the White House, but it was abundantly clear on Saturday that he had come to Manchester for more than the sub-freezing temperatures.

Addressing over 500 activists at the New Hampshire Republican Party's annual meeting as part of a two-day swing through the state, Giuliani sketched the broad outlines of what looks like a presidential run. Sounding at times like a motivational speaker, Giuliani cautioned against cynicism and pessimism in the wake of November's election results and challenges in the ongoing War on Terror. The message especially resonated with the audience in this critical primary state, where the Republican Party just lost control of both chambers of the legislature for the first time since the 1870s.

"The best way we remain safe and we retain our freedom...is remaining on offense, remaining strong and not becoming weak in a time of pressure," Giuliani said in a line that drew the biggest applause from the crowd at the Palace Theater.

"Hey, if the Rudy boosters started posting anything of substance..."

I'm convinced the Rudyphiles don't think with their brains, but their emotions. They're letting that nice, patriotic feeling they got after September 11, 2001 and Giuliani's leadership take over the rational thought they'd have otherwise that Giuliani ain't conservative on ANYTHING other than the war on terror. And every republican candidate except for two or maybe three are conservative on the war on terror.

Unless Rudy does an about face on at least half a dozen issues he will never earn the support of conservatives. Quite frankly, I've heard a lot about Rudy's views on national issues by reading his own past statements.

My problem with your definition of pragmatism is that it pre-emptively marginalizes issues of tremendous importance to conservatives. I don't expect 100% agreement with a candidate, but I also don't expect a massive over reaction to the recent election that results in a leap so far to the left that core principles are abandoned.

Of the leading contenders, Giuliani is easily the farthest to the left, why the need for so many to jump the bandwagon this early?

As for the tenor of the debate, I'll simply say that many of the Rudy boosters fit your description to a tee. FR is alive and well and if anything will lead to its downfall it will be mindless boosterism at the expense of conservatism.

That's the message I'm getting too. :>(((((

That's why I think it important for JimRob to let us know if we are allowed to support Rudy on this site. IIRC Rudy garnered quite a number of Freeper support on the FR poll.

It's like BUSH's strategery. We keep them tired down on the RUDY threads the Hunter threads wallow with the winds blowing through them like a wasteland. They don't even know when they are being pandered to. "I'll overthrow Roe v Wade". yeah right, that is not presidential!

Well, that's what the Republicans (and now the nation) gets for betraying their base. So, let's just repeat the same thing in 2008 and run a candidate whose views are the opposite of the Republican Base. Good idea. .

Bite me and if you haven't noticed Feingold is a Democrat

Precisely. It will be interesting to see which direction FR takes.

And here's how I think it will go:

-- Rudy wins the nomination.
-- Many of the purists will consign themselves to the sidelines to sulk, saying they will either vote for the Vegetarian-AustrianEconomics Party nominee or will not vote at all.
-- Rudy will beat Hillary in a massive landslide, even with the purists off sulking.

Someone asked me earlier how I think that conservativism will become irrelevant. Conservatism is always relevant as long as we have the freedom to debate in his nation. But many conservatives will be rendered irrelevant because their purist tendencies will not allow them to participate in the great election of 2008 because Rudy publicly appeared in a dress as a joke a few times.

OH MY GOD. YOU JUST CALLED ABORTION A CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT.

This was an error on my part, sorry. Thank-you for your polite, diplomatic correction.

The right to an abortion is currently the law. Whether you, I or the person down the street likes it, that is the law that our country has been left with. For those who do not like it they are welcome to peacefully protest the law--it is their right.

For myself and many others,at this time in the history of our country, there is a larger picture, one that contains safety and security. As in your vociferous defense of the unborn, to which you are entitled, I likewise am entitled to be concerned for the safety and security of our citizens, the defense of our borders and our Constitution. I never again want to see a disaster like 9-11 and will do all that I can to prevent it from happening.

"IIRC Rudy garnered quite a number of Freeper support on the FR poll."

Being on of two moderates in that poll (along with John McCain), Giuliani is a distant third and barely ahead of Tancredo in fourth. Hunter, Gingrich, Tancredo and Paul are all sucking in the same kind-of-conservative vote from this site.

If Rudy wins, I strongly believe he will split the party.

You're doing your darnest to make sure that happens, aren't you.

No. How else can I convince the rest of the world that supporting Rudy portends disaster if y'all aren't here promoting him and posting threads about him? :^)

But you aren't- you're a conservative NOT a Republican. Isn't that what you said? Are you a member of the Conservative Party? I'm a Republican which means I vote straight Republican - I give money to Republican candidates. I don't know what more you want.

So, you're not an actual member of the Republican Party. I thought so.

You may donate to Republican candidates, you may vote for Republican candidates, and your Party Preference may be Republican, but until you are elected to a position within the Republican Party, you are not an actual Member of the Republican Party. You're a voter and a donor, but not a member.

I am a Member of the Republican Party. I am in my 3rd term as an elected Precinct Committeeman. I've served twice as a State Committeeman for the Republican Party. So, before you run your mouth again about who is really a Republican or not, you may want to consider that fact that you are not a member of the Republican Party yourself.

Now, I know that some people on my side are members of the party, and I know some people on your side are members too. But it was YOU that was questioning who is an actual Republican or not.

If Giuliani gets the republican nomination, I will vote constitution party (mostly because I live in a safe state, if I didn't, I'd be really conflicted.) The constitution party will put up either Jim Gilchrist, Jerome R. Corsi or Alan Keyes. Most likely Gilchrist, he's the only one showing real interest (I really like Gilchrist too.)
