Not American Idol but music related;

The National Association of Recording Merchandisers (NARM) and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame have put together a list of 200 albums that should be in every music collection.

Let the debate begin.

Some quick thoughts of my own:

- Three Dixie Chicks records in the top 113...huh? For a group that does not write their own songs and are average musicians, this is insane. And for Wide Open Spaces to be ranked at #33 ahead of such records as Miles Davis's Kind of Blue at #34, Jimi Henrix's Are You experienced, Green Day's American Idiot at #61, Coldplay's A Rush of Blood to the Head at #65, Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here at #79 and Radiohead's OK Computer is just stupefying.

- R.E.M.'s Automatic for the People on the list at #73 while Murmur is left off. For any original R.E.M. fan that is just patently ridiculous. Automatic is about their 7th best record and pales in comparison to paradigm shifting albums like Murmur

- Shania Twain's Come on Over at #21 is also interesting. I realize it was one of the early pop-country breakout records but #21 ahead of several mentioned above just doesn't make sense.

Some records that I think are vastly underrated:

- The Clash - London Calling at #96 is way to low for a seminal post-punk record that helped inspire bands such as U2.

- Green Day's American Idiot album is too low at #61 and should be switched with their Dookie album sitting at # 50. While I do not agree with green day's politics, American Idiot is an absolutely brilliant written record and achieves perfectly what the band was hoping to accomplish.

- For the First Frank Sinatra record to appear at #140 is a tragedy. frank inspired countless artists on this list and more and his music should be given a higher ranking. Three Dixie Chicks records better than all Sinatra's? Give me a break...

- Smashing Pumpkins Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness - Billy Corgan's musical genius as a writer, singer, instrumentalist, producer, etc. should get the recognition it deserves. one of the most under appreciated artists of the last 20 years.

I agree with your assessments, Wyatt. The Dixie Chicks thing seems political, sadly. And I totally agree about London Calling, it is in my personal top 10. Paradigm shifting...

I think the pitch is just going to be that one night in the top 6. I hope anyway.

I don't know, because they said Randy and Paula are going to got to Louisiana and see the Katrina area "first". Plus they said they will spotlighting other poverty areas.

We want to rip on Suckjaya's hair and see Paula cavorting like a drunken sorority girl. We know there is poverty and horrors in the world, but is it to much to ask to take 2 hours per week off from it??

Agree completely! It's a sad thing that politics is ruling in areas that it shouldn't.

I believe the Dixie Chicks biggest hit single was Landslide. A inferior remake of a Stevie Nicks written and performed song.

"I believe the Dixie Chicks biggest hit single was Landslide. A inferior remake of a Stevie Nicks written and performed song."

Yep. If they were great musicians or songwriters, I could buy it. But they are neither.

BTW, not having a Son Volt, Wilco, or Uncle Tupelo record on this list is a shame. The absolutely best songwriting comes out of the alt.country genre.

Hey, keep your voice down. I know it's charity--that's my point. We, as in the US, give so much to the world already. They make it sound like we don't, hence we must get Bono to rally up the funds. It was my opinion, that's all.

19 Records is good at cute. It works for the girls. Not so much for Bo or Daughtry.

19E didn't do cute for Daughtry. And even if they did, it clearly worked. His album is a mega-hit. You may have meant to type "Hicks."

"19E didn't do cute for Daughtry."

You can hear AI/19 all over that record. It was 1000% designed to cross over to "pop" radio. It's a good record given that target audience. For a pure alt.rock audience it misses the mark.

This is the first season I've watched Idol. Now my husband is hooked.

The charm of AI is that it really is old-fashioned family entertainment. As I said on an earlier post, it's a latter day version of the Ed Sullivan Show.

I can't take any credit for it. I don't know how to make animated gifs, but I thought it was cute. :)
